Yay, my birthday. I couldn't believe I was finally 21!
I'd ordered a cuppa from room service the night before so I could laze around in bed for a bit before getting ready to visit Copenhagen. Guess who forgot to tick the milk box? b*****. Oh well we set off for breakfast. More smoked salmon of course.
I logged onto the ship's wifi (we have a limited time for free) and found lots of birthday wishes from friends and family. A great way to start the day.
It was a wet and cold day, so we decided we would utilise the "hop on hop off bus" to keep dry. We visited the summer palace and the attached chapel where little baby prince Christian of Denmark was christened.
There weren't too many people around given the rain, but lots of bikes were parked. This is a city of bikes. Anthony actually suggested it would be a good idea for us to get some bikes to travel around. I reminded him I hadn't ridden one for about twenty years and I wasn't undertaking my return on my birthday on cobblestones.
Next stop was the National Museum. This was too well heated, but interesting nonetheless. Again you can see the history of a nation filled with lots of wars and invasions. I also thought it was interesting to see how all the ruling classes across many countries seemed to be "globalised" hundreds of years before the term was coined. Everyone seemed to be copying everyone else, sharing daughters as wives across nations as well as fashions, art and architecture. All keeping up with the Joneses - or taking their goodies for themselves. Hopefully we've moved on!
After we left the museum we had a choice of two bus stops. We turned right, but we should've gone left. We just missed the bus and had to wait almost 20 minutes for the next one. When it arrived we took off back around the city to the other bus stop we could've walked to. The bus stopped and the driver said he was now having a 20 minute break!
However, this turned out to be a lucky break as there was a jazz band playing in the square overlooking the palace with crowds relaxing with beer and wine (and the rain had stopped). We joined them. Would you believe they were serving Australian wine. It was great to see some people!
Anthony found a food stand selling some yummy local sausages on a roll with the works. Delicious. And then we did some window shopping in some of the fancy shops before hopping on the bus again. Our last stop was next to "the little mermaid", so I had to take the obligatory photo before we returned to the ship.
We dropped off our bags in our cabin and on the door was a "happy birthday" sign with balloons. Inside were some lovely yellow roses from Anthony. Very nice!
This port sees an enormous turnover in passengers and as a consequence all the newbies had to go to the safety demonstrations while we enjoyed a drink in our vey own bar. It was also good to see (or more correctly, hear) the band changed over as well. The music moved up a few decades!!
We were a bit late leaving as some Chinese guests missed the mandatory safety session (!). We didn't mind as our friendly bar staff gave us our usual tapas to enjoy with our pre sailing drinks. Plus the music was SO much better. They even did a number from THIS decade!
The sun was now shining and outside our window...bloody wind things!
After dinner we sat in one of the bars and listened to a new pianist and vocalist who kindly did a medley of Les Miserable for me to sing along to. Happy birthday to me :)
