Illaroo Campground, near Wooli
After the busyness, noise, traffic and people of the Goldie we were keen to get away to somewhere more natural and quiet for our last camp of the trip. A national park campground was just what the doctor ordered, however, we were gobsmacked at the cost of the freecamp site. The grounds were beautiful with beachfront individual, although narrow, sites and the beach was gorgeous but there were no facilities other than longdrop toilets. Because it was windy and cool we didn't swim so we spent the afternoon walking around the rocks, collecting shells and investigating the expanse of rock pools at low tide. They were the most awesome rock pools we've ever seen!! We saw 2 octopuses and 2 huge and beautiful nudibranchs. They're like sea snails without a shell. Instead, they look like seaweed, with frilly bits all over them. The ones we saw were about 20 centimetres long. In one pool, we found an enormous, bright red hermit crab eating a dead one. After collecting handfuls of pretty shells we headed back and had a relaxing afternoon watching the sea and enjoying our last happy hour.
