Hey peoples! Have finally found some time to update my blog! It has been some time since the last blog but I figured there were not that much interesting to tell after a whole week in Playa del Carmen, because that place mainly is good for two things: going to the beach and partying. Of course I could tell you about every night I went out but this might not be the place to tell stories like that - and alcohol was involved so how much would I remember?
Before Playa del Carmen I went to Tulum and spend half a day seeing the seaside Maya ruins and going having my first two dives in a cenote which more or less is a cave filled with water. Of all the dives I have had, this was probably one of my favorite dives. Really something different and amazing!
Afterwards I went to Playa del Carmen where I mostly used my time lying on the beach with a book and going out. At that point I really needed to relax a bit and not think too much about my next destination. But even though I got through several of hundreds pages in a few books (which is unusual for me) I actually did go to see some places. I went to Isla Cozumel and followed in the footsteps of Jacques Cousteau with four dives in total. It was beautiful, a lot of colorful fish and amazing corals. The coral reef is the second biggest in the world and extends all the way south to Belize and Honduras. I also went to see the one of the new 7 world wonders: the pyramid in Chichen Itza. It might be a world wonder but being the sixth Meso-american ruin sight I had seen, it kind of took some glance from the whole experience. In fact, I am getting a little bit sick of ruins at this point to be honest! This does not meen that I am done because I am actually going to Tikal in Guatemala tomorrow. I really have to because Tikal should one of the biggest highlights in Central America and the most impressive of all the Meso-american ruins. For those who does not know what I meen about Meso-american, it is a the collective name of the different ancient cultures such as the Aztecs, the Mayans etc.
I went to Belize after Playa del Carmen but not without trouble. I had to go pay a non-immigrant fee of about 20-25 US dollars which I was told I could pay at the border. But when I arrived to the border I realized that the Mexican immigration had not given me any stamp or turist card when I entered Mexico from the US border. That gave me a lot of trouble and I ended up paying 50 US dollars for not having my turist card and a bribe of 15 US dollars for not being taken to the police station. That was really some experience! Today almost the same thing happened when I did not realize that I had to go get the Guatemalan stamp in my passport after having got the Belizean exit stamp... but this ended happily when I only had to go to the airport in Flores and get the stamp there. No problema. But if I had the age for it I would have gotten some extra grey hair worrying about that situation!
But I arrived in Belize on the tranquil island of Caye Caulker where I have been snorkeling and diving. You see the picture on the top? Yep, thats the Blue Hole and yep, I did dive that son-of-a-b****. I had great expectations of seeing all kinds of sharks before going there but I did not even see one single shark. That was dissappointing. But the other dives I did were excellent - it was like diving in an aquarium (which was in fact also the name of the one dive site). It was a lot like Cozumel though. The snorkeling tour I went on was actually as impressive as the diving. I got to snorkel among the reef and with colorful fish but I also got to pet a nurse shark on the stomach and a huge sting ray on the back and I saw the biggest moren ever. On top of that we went to the snorkeling sites on a nice sailboat where we could groove to the laid-back Belizean reggae which made the whole experience of Belize seem more like Jamaica than a Central American country. I really loved the time I spent there and I did meet some really, really nice travelers as well. Since Playa I have met Danes EVERYWHERE! And I meet a lot of Norwigean people as well. Good chance to improve my understanding of our Scandinavian brother.
But as said: I arrived in Guatemala today in the small town of Flores and I already love this country. It is so cheap and quiet compared to Mexico and it does not seem like people are as eager to rip you of selling you different stuff as the Mexicans are. In Playa everyone wants to sell you something. One guy actually tried to sell me a trip to Chichen Itza for a 100 dollars when the price was 50! Obviously I did not go with him :)
But tomorrow its Tikal where I have to get up at 4.00 in the morning to experience the sunrise and the rich animal life. Most animals come out in the morning and in the evening so I am crossing my fingers. I will tell if I see something cool - at least the ruins are there so I am sure I will!
Until then enjoy yourselves out there! Peace out!
