Hi folks! Sorry, I have been so long but I just haven't found that much space to update my blog. I suppose thats a good thing, though - means I am busy and doing a lot of things. And I definietly am! I had only just arrived in Guatemala last time and since then I have been two Honduras and Nicaragua as well. So I have three countries to tell you guys about!
Last time I ended my blog just before going to Tikal, which is Guatemala's most famous tourist sight - maybe even the most famous in all of Central America! Of course I was excited about going there but also, it was the ninth arqueological site I was about to visit so I I was affraid that I might have gotten too tired about ruins and pyramids. But Tikal was a totally different experience! It's very much bigger than the other ruins I have been to and it was much more quiet because I went really early in the day. Also we got the best guide ever who had practically grown up in Tikal and he took us off the beaten path and provoked the howler monkeys so we could experience a true howler monkey concert! On top of all that, he also knew everything about Tikal and showed us many birds and made it a very different experience than any of the arqeuological sites in Mexico. The ruins where impressive but not the most impressive I had seen but it was the whole experience of being among the wild animals and being in the jungle that made this special. So together with Palenque, I rate Tikal my favorite Meso American arqeuological site.
After Tikal and Flores (where I took the day tour to Tikal from), I went to Semuc Champey, the most beautiful spot in Guatemala to some people. I stayed at the coolest hostel in nearby Lanquin that had great views and a very party orientated crowd - I had a blast here! I went to Semuc Champey and went caving where I was practically swimming with a candle in my handle. I jumped into the water from rocks, swings and from ten meter high bridges here and I got to try the natural water slides of Semuc Champey which was also a great place to just sit down and relax in the fresh water pools. The whole day experience was nothing less than amazing. I ended up staying here one more day than planned to take care of my hangover. And what better way to do that than floating down the river, tubing, with a beer in the hand! In Semuc I also randomly met up with Chrissie and Robert from South Africa who I had met a month before in Tequila! Since Semuc we have been traveling a lot together though and have become great friends! I also experienced something really random when I met a Spanish guy who I went diving with in Galapagos in december! Totally out of the blue, didn't know he was there, didn't even have his facebook! The world is smaller than you think.
From Semuc, I went to Antigua, Guatemala's most charming colonial town and famous for schools to learn Spanish. It was a nice place to stay, but at this point I have had it with colonial style cities. There are so many of them in Mexico and they can all be characterized in the same way: Charming plaza/zocalo with a church/cathedral in one end and narrow streets, often in cobblestone. Antigua was the same way. I did go to the nearby vulcano, though, the one called Pacaya where the chances of seeing lava should be decent. So I went, I got soaked from rain, I had 2 minutes of view from the top before clouds surrounded us and of course: no lava. The tour was funny in some way because we where as unfortunate as would could be. That thought entertained me a little bit.
As Antigua felt like something I had seen before, I quickly left for Lake Atitlan (the picture) and San Pedro La Laguna. Here I stayed a couple of days and went hiking a volcano that was 3 km's high, I kayaked in the lake and just chilled to the max. That was a beautiful place.
I had one more night stay in Antigua before I used one whole day to go to La Ceiba in Honduras. This time I, boringly enough, had a quite border crossing and got all the stamps I needed! Finally! I went to Utila, which is one of the Bay Islands, soon after I arrived in La Ceiba, and that was for one single purpose: diving! And I soon found out that, that is what you do there. You either go get your diving certificate or you go use the certificate you already have which was what I did! And its cheap. I got a dive package with 10 dives for only 250 dollars! That is really cheap for my standards; I paid 120 dollars for two dives in Galapagos! The diving was much the same as in Cozumel and Belize but it was better here because we always went through the different fishs and other animals that we saw. That was cool. I didn't get to see any of the whale sharks that I had hoped since the season had just ended. That was a bummer but I saw many other cool things. I had the best night dive ever and I went to a wrecked cargo ship. I enjoyed my time here very much even though the heat and all the diving made me too tired to do much else than just dive, sleep and eat.
I went make to La Ceiba in Honduras for the biggest carnival in Central America. I went couchsurfing there with Rob and Chrissie and a Mormon American couple at Andrea's house, Andrea being that awesome person who hosted us. We had a great time celebrating the town's saint! Great party and great company! Only bad thing that happened was that I lost my small backpack but luckily I only had my books, my head lamp and sun screen in it so it wasn't a big loss and I have replaced it with a beautiful Honduran children's soccer backpack which cost me about 10 dollars.
From La Ceiba, we spent a whole day traveling with almost any kind of transportation to get to Leon, Nicaragua, where I am at now. We traveled for 16 hours and went in taxis, vans, air-conditioned busses, chicken busses, bicycle taxis... you name it. But we arrived! Yesterday I went volcano boarding where you can actually catch speed up to 80 km/h! I didn't go that fast though thus it had rained but it was still I cool experience and I bet not a lot of people can say they have boarded an active volcano!
So now I have come to today. Tomorrow I will go to Isla Ometepe to climb yet another volcano and afterwards it is Costa Rica! But I only have about one week left so I won't enough time to see all the things I wanna see in Costa Rica. I must save that for another time.
That was it for now! Will be going back in a week so I guess I will so you guys back home very soon! Hasta Luego!
