On the road. It took me for ever to get out of Lima: firstly because the city is huge and then because I took one or two wrong turns - which happens easily when street signs are absent.
But here in Gardenias it took the bun: the map showed a split of the Panamericana: the long way around, a short cut and a way through the place. I intended to take the long way, but the fork to the right made that turn only to cross the straight on a bridge, leading into a roundabout, which flushed me into the village. Here was I on this dirt-road together with an armada of minibuses and hundreds on the sidelines waiting to be picked up. The spontaneous order created by drivers looking just for their own advantage served a single purpose only: to keep it somehow flowing. Orderly and safe traffic were not in the mix. Well, stay home traveler if you can't handle it.
Eventually I made my way thru it, straight ahead the dusty road and the potholes. The dirt-road made a turn to bring me to a paved road. And to make it clear that pavement is a costly achievement the next thing I see is a toll station. I expected one to show up, so I picked a line and prepared the change. Just before i reached the booth the agent closed the line and advised to turn around. I nonetheless tried to turn on the charm, but all in vain: She wouldn't let me thru. And neither the coach waiting behind me, which of course I had to force to set back first. The driver did so very reluctantly, leaving just enough space for me to press the car thru the concrete and a row of pylons. Once at the othervbooth i had to learn that i couldn't get thru here either, because - shocker - this was the tollroad for vehicles only of a certain size. My car was to small to get a pass.
Back to square one and take the right turn this time.
