Hello again, not long between updates this time.I was up to Ngorogoro Crater yesterday so I'll start from there. The game drive was on the Saturday and everywhere we turned there were animals, it was just amazing. We saw virtually every animal there was to see in the crater, barring rhinos and leopards, both of which are very difficult to find anyway.I think I mentioned about the lions fighting and mating, but we also saw tons of other lions sleeping and playing, I think we saw most of a whole pride!I definitely mentioned the cheetahs, but I can't stop talking about them, they were so fantastic! We saw a bunch of flamingos on the lake in the middle of the crater, which was exciting as I hadn't seen them before. We didn't see them that close though but they still looked pretty cool. That afternoon we drove back to Arusha where we stayed at the snake park again. We had goat on a spit for dinner, which was quite nice, it tasted like lamb, however there was a lot of skin (very chewy) and not enough meat. After dinner I headed around to look at the snakes as I hadn't seen them yet and it was pretty spooky looking at them I the dark. Some of them were moving around and looking at me which was creepy.I went to bed early as I was still feeling a bit ill.
On Sunday we left a little later than usual, 8.30am, which meant I didn't have to wake up until 7.30am, very exciting. From here we started out journey towards Dar es Salaam which is quite a way from Arusha. We were stopping off at a campsite called Timbo for one night to break up the trip.Along the way we were hoping to catch a glimpse of Mt Kilimanjaro but unfortunately it wasn't a very clear day so all we saw was clouds. The campsite was quite nice, it had a pool and a comfortable bar.We had Thai green curry with chicken for dinner which I quite enjoyed. We have groups that rotate for cleaning, washing and cooking, so the cooking team did a pretty good job that night.
Monday we were up early again to head the rest of the way to Dar, which we got to at about 3pm.Here we did some banking, I was running seriously low on Tanzanian shillings, and then we caught a short 10 minute ferry across to our campsite, at Mikadi beach. It was really nice there, the showers were awesome. They're outdoors surrounded by bamboo, very cool. That night we had steak for dinner, yay, very awesome and tasty! We also had a garbage bag party, where you get 2 garbage bags each and have to make a costume out of them.It was a lot of fun and then we headed into the bar for a big night out, all drinking too much again, lol.
The next day we left our truck again to head to Zanzibar. It was a long morning, we spent ages waiting in the queue for the ferry back to Dar es Salaam and then even longer waiting for the ferry to Zanzibar. The ferry took about 2 hours and I'm glad I fell asleep because I was feeling pretty sea sick for a while.I don't know what it is about me and these trips, I've been car sick and sea sick and it's just crazy. We arrived in Stone Town in the early afternoon.Stone Town is the main town on Zanzibar and it is full of tiny alleyways and can be very confusing. We headed out on a Spice Tour in the afternoon, first having a look at some of the main buildings around the town, such as an old fort, palace, church and slave market. From there we headed to a spice plantation to look at and sample the spices. We got to try all these different teas and tropical fruits as well.I bought a package of different spices and different teas.Very nice. Our hotel, Safari Resort, was lovely, it felt so good to sleep in a nice proper bed and have a lovely hot shower.
Yesterday, Wednesday, most of the group went on a tour to swim with dolphins off the coast.I decided to stay behind and wander by myself through the streets. I got so lost quite a few times, the streets are very confusing, but luckily the people are very friendly and always willing to point you in the right direction. I found an internet café which I stayed at for a couple of hours and then had a look at some curio (souvenir) shops. There is sooooo much stuff I want to buy.I'll probably end up having to ship it all home or something. It was fun to look around by myself and have some Sarah time, which I think I really needed. That afternoon we drove to our resort for the next two nights, Kenwa Rocks. The place is gorgeous. The rooms are quite nice but the beach is just amazing! The ocean is so blue and the sand so white, it really is incredible.I didn't bring a swimsuit with me so unfortunately I couldn't swim (I'm hoping to buy one today) but I played volleyball with all the boys.I wasn't very good but definitely improving by the end.Sadly though I have this huge bruise on the edge of my palm from hitting the ball a funny way. That night was one of our group's birthdays, Gary, so we had a little party for him. There was also a dance party going on so it was a really good night. There were these acrobats that performed for us for a while which was pretty cool.I stayed out quite late last night, ending up on the beach looking for shooting stars, it was really lovely.
Slept in today, very exciting, won't happen again for the rest of the trip.Clare and I were hoping to go shopping down the beach today but it's raining at the moment so we might have to wait until after lunch to meander down there.I think right now I might go sit in a hammock for a while and read my book, waiting for the rain to let up.Love you and miss you all, hopefully right again soon, although today and tomorrow I'll pretty much just be hanging out at the beach. This is the life!
