Whilst in Merida we went on a Cenotes trip- the underground swimming pools. They are flooded sink holes caused by the meteorite that killed off the dinosaurs. The cenotes are only found in the Yucatan Peninsula. This was a brilliant experience. On the trip we went to two cenotes (se-note-tays) the first we had to jump in from the rocks above which was SO scary (Tom doesn´t think so and it was only about two metres!). We were givemn snorkels to explore the pools. These are actually where cave divers love as from the pools there are miles of underwater caves - rather them than me!
We then took a four hour bus from Merida to Cancun and then a 25 minute boat journey from Cancun to the Isla Mujeres. We were SO excited when we saw the Carribean Sea!!
The Isla Mujeres is beautiful and it is low season so not many people here! Isle Mujeres-Women´s Isle- no one knows why it is called that - possibly Mayan origin. We chose to stay here instead of Cancun Zona Hotelera as in our guide book it says ´Backpacker´s favourite´- and it is beautiful here. There are white powder sand beaches, hot sun, reefs, brightly coloured fish, a mayan ruin and so much wildlife- we have already seen dolphins, manatees, sea lions, seals and turtles.
Yesterday we hired a golf cart (yes, you heard right! It´s the way most people get around here!) and explored the island for the day, it took about one hour to golf cart round the whole island. We went to a turtle sanctuary which was really interesting - we saw a 300kg turtle! You can see the turtles from babies til adulthood and where they let them back into the ocean. There was also a nurse shark too!
We chose to stay at the Hotel Roca Mar on the island as the hostels were labelled as ´sweatboxes´in the guide book. All we can see from the balcony is the Carrbean Sea- beautiful. There will be photos to come!
I hope everyone is ok at home and we will try to upload photos as soon as possible.
Lots of Love Fi and Tom
xXx
