Weipa Rio Tinto Bauxite Mine, Queensland

Went on a mine tour today at Rio Tinto Bauxite Mine. We actually drove into the mine on a bus and shared the tracks with huge trucks !! It was massive - they opened the mine in 1964 and have only mined 11% of the bauxite so far so you can imagine how big it is !!!!

All the tents set up at Weipa Caravan Park. We are here until tomorrow and then we head off to Bamaga. John, Jos and I are going on the Rio Tinto Mine tour this afternoon so look out for more photos later!!!

Stopped at Coen to get a bite to eat but when we saw the prices decided to head to the local stream and make our own lunch - I guess when you are in the middle of nowhere you can charge what you like. This picture is of the Coen Post Office. After lunch will head to Weipa and stay 2 nights in a caravan park. The drive is about 230kms on mostly unsealed roads.

This was a huge lagoon filled with lily pads and flowers hence the name Lily Pad Lagoon.
