OK, I'm the first one to admit that my last post was a little too long. I'll try to keep this shorter, there's not that much to tell, anyway. After our amazing (though brief) stay in Cambodia we flew back to Thailand to spend the last few days before Indonesia in Bangkok. We've heard nothing good about Bangkok from other travelers, so we figured it might not be such a bad idea to use some of our time there doing some of the things that have been needing to be done for some time. Like uploading our pictures in a cloud. So far I've just been storing the pictures in the camera's memory card and on our laptop. The memory card was filling up rapidly, so that wouldn't do anymore.
We booked a place a little further off the city center, called Hive 28. It's new and well-kept by a young couple. And the price is very good, at 390 baht per night. We had a late plane from Siem Reap, but luckily the flight was a little ahead of time and the immigration procedures went smoothly. Our bags were among the first to arrive on the belt and we got into a taxi quickly too. The guy drove like a maniac, but because of that we were in our accommodation in about an hour from landing, which is pretty good, considering that it's 27 kilometers from Don Mueang airport. The drive cost us 270 baht, the 50 baht airport fee included, later it cost us 165 baht to get to Suvarnabhumi airport. At our hotel we were informed that the fan cooled room we had booked was unavailable for some reason, so they put us in an air-conditioned room for the first night. That room was tiny, but it was very cool. The following day we moved upstairs into our own fan cooled room with a balcony. It was a little bigger, though the balcony was small. The beds in both rooms are on the borderline of firm and hard, but we've had harder. The personal architecture of the rooms create a nice touch to the place, it almost looks like a storage or a factory, although more comfortable. The wifi worked great even upstairs. We used it to upload hundreds of our pictures to Google Drive.
So our hotel was cheap and nice, but since it was far from the center, there wasn't that much to do. We bought our breakfasts from a nearby 7-Eleven and the Family Mart just next door. There were a couple of bigger malls nearby too, the one called The Mall was too expensive for us, but we liked Big C, which was closer. Sini bought two T shirts there. Underneath Big C there was also a good food court, we especially liked their sushi stall selling all pieces for 5 baht. There was a night market within a walking distance, which we visited only briefly. The only thing we seemed to lack was a sink deep enough to wash our clothes in… Luckily that was nothing that a cut up six liter water canister couldn't solve.
Whether it was the sushi, or the cold servings we got at the night market, or something else entirely, I got sick again. It probably wasn't the food though, since my main symptom was fever. By the time Sini found us a thermometer it showed 38.1 Celsius, I'm guessing it might have peaked a little higher. Not too high, but I still didn't feel like going out to the city to explore its wonders. My stomach became problematic too… Not as bad as in India, though. So for the last two days I just stayed in the room emptying out our medicine supplies. I did get all of the pictures uploaded, but otherwise I just laid down and read The Game of Thrones on our ebook reader. Our innkeepers were chivalrous enough to give me more toilet paper to use in the privy whilst I was hoping for a maester to give milk of the poppy. Luckily I had no wounds, I would have stuffed molded bread into them…
Anyway, Sini did get out a little more (and hence didn't get crazy…). She took a boat (17 baht) along the river from a pier close to the Big C, changed once and arrived in the center of the city. She saw some temples and the "backpacker ghetto" Khao San Road. She liked her trip well enough, she might later write her own account on what she did and saw. As for me, I just got better. By the time it was time to leave for Indonesia, I had been feverless for almost a full day and felt a lot better.
It's funny, that we ended up spending a whole week in Bangkok without me seeing the city center even once. However, our week consisted of two layovers between flights and later five consecutive nights that I more or less spent in bed. I won't be judging Bangkok with only this knowledge of it, but I can say that we both enjoyed Thailand very much. Even though we spent five days out of our original 25 in Cambodia… And twelve just in Koh Lanta and neighboring Krabi… Well, I guess we just liked the sun. It may well be that we'll one day "have to" return here to take a closer look. There are straight flights from Helsinki to Bangkok…
But for now, we're off to Indonesia!
