Getting to Currawinya NP from Welford NP required overnight stops - 10/8/15 Quilpie, Qld 11/8/15 Eulo, Qld Currawinya was a disappointment. Lack of information boards is very frustrating. There are homestead ruins but no details. Campgrounds are floodplains with barriers to keep you away from the water. 07/8/15. JC Ruins, Qld 08/8/15. Windorah, Qld Spent last night at Windorah. The annual rodeo was on so we looked forward to seeing some of it. We arrived in time for the pre-preliminary rounds of camp drafting in the novice category. After 30 mins of not knowing what was happening, we headed off to Welford np. Had to visit Birdsville, the home of Big Red. Population of 120 which swells to 7,500 in September when the Birdsville races are on. Went out to Big Red and it sure is big and red! Countryside looks quite green thanks to some rain a few months ago. We camped the previous night in Bedourie (heart of the shire). Great pub meals in both towns was a highlight.

This is channel country where the endless flood plains are brought to life when the Diamantina River floods and channels spread the water throughout a huge area. A big flood like in 2011 meant towns like Birdsville can be cut off for months. But the floods are always welcome as they breathe life into the parched soil.
