FARFRUMWURKEN
We arrived on the dock at 10:00 a.m. in Cairns (pronounced Cans) to sunny and 85 degree temperatures. We had arranged with HAL to go out on a Tropical Rain Forest and Aboriginal Adventure that was scheduled to last five hours.
It gave us a little experience of the Aboriginal culture, wildlife along with a chance for an amphibious vehicle ride in an old WWII DUCK. We watched a little didgeridoo demonstration from five of the local tribesman and then headed out for our 30 minute trip on the "duck" through the rain forest high about Cairns. We gave it our best when we tried tried spear throwing and boomerang toss, but only Jean seemed to do an acceptable job as far as the natives were concerned.
We also had the chance to visit a wild animal park inside the rain forest complex, so it was a nice chance for us to get close again to both the koala's and kangaroo for maybe one last time.
Just a little history for those who just might want to know, Cairns is one of the major cities on the east coast of Far North Queensland in Australia. The city is the 5th most populous in Queensland and 14th overall in Australia. Cairns was founded in 1876 and named after William Wellington Cairns, Governor of Queensland from 1875-1877. It was formed to serve miners heading for the Hodgkinson River goldfield, but experienced a decline when an easier route was discovered from Port Douglas.
The estimated residential population of the Cairns urban area in 2016 is about 160,000 based on 2015 data. Cairns is a popular travel destination for tourists because of its tropical climate and access to the Great Barrier Reef, one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
Over the next couple of days we'll be visiting Sherrard Island and Torres Strait on our way over to Darwin. It seems like we've been on the ship for a lot longer than six days, only thirty-two more days to go. Thanks for following us on this trip around Australia, from the stats it looks like quite few people are. Hope you are enjoying my shots, if you'd like to see a few more, drop over to www.farfrumwurken,com.
Thanks Again !
