FARFRUMWURKEN
We've arrived in Brisbane after traveling 543 nautical miles from Sydney. It's 61 degrees F under sunny skies in the City of Bridges. I thought I'd give you just a little history for those who are interested regarding this bustling metropolis. It's the capital and most lived in city in the Australian state of Queensland, and the third most populous city in Australia.
Australia is about the same land mass as the entire United States, so you can appreciate just how long it's going to take us to make the circumnavigation of this large country. We're headed out today on a Koala and Lone Pine Sanctuary tour and then will take one of the many City Cats ($5.60 AU) down the river to the main tourist area South Bank.
I think I want to join the Koala Collective. The local labour laws that protect Koala's here in Australia only allow them to work 30 minutes once every two days and they are not allowed to work if the temperature climbs above 32 degrees C. They say that when you're holding a Koala and if he/she poops on you, you need to consider that good luck - I'm sure.
Brisbane's metropolitan area has a population of approximately 2.3 million, and the South East Queensland urban zone, centered on Brisbane, encompasses a population of totaling about 3.6 million. The Brisbane central business district is centered on the original European settlement and is situated just inside a bend of the Brisbane River, not far from its mouth at Moreton Bay.
The metro area of Brisbane extends in all directions along the floodplain of the Brisbane River Valley between Moreton Bay and the Great Dividing Range, sprawling across several of Australia's most populous local government areas (LGAs), most centrally the City of Brisbane, which is by far the most populous LGA in the nation. The people of Brisbane are referred to as Brisbanite's.
One of the oldest cities in Australia, Brisbane was founded on the ancient homelands of the indigenous Turrbal and Jagera peoples. Named after the Brisbane River on which it is located which in turn was named after Scotsman Sir Thomas Brisbane, the Governor of New South Wales from 1821 to 1825.
The city was marred by the Australian frontier wars between 1847 and 1855, and development was partly set back by the Great Fire of Brisbane, and the Great Brisbane Flood. Brisbane was chosen as the capital when Queensland was proclaimed a separate colony from New South Wales in 1859.
Several large cultural, international and sporting events have been held at Brisbane, including the 1982 Commonwealth Games, World Expo '88, the final Goodwill Games in 2001, and the 2014 G20 summit. Next stop will be Hamilton Island in the Whitsunday Island group.

Ian Hair Great picture Bob. I did this climb a few years ago. There are 10 or 12 climbers all attached to the bridge by a rail and ring pull. The climb is not that strenuous because it's done slowly. The bonus is the fabulous views from the top. By the way, make sure you haven't been drinking - they breathalyser you before the climb. Keep the great pics coming Bob.
Ian Hair Seems you haven't made it as a world city unless you've got an "eye". The Brisbane Wheel looks great on the riverfront as do your pics of the city Bob. As Australia's third largest city, Brissie sure looks pretty.
Terry Holgate How about some photos without the special effects
Terry Holgate what a great shot.....one of the things I want to do
Terry Holgate are they fruit bats?
Terry Holgate artist's rendering?
Ian Hair Terry, they look like fruit bats or flying foxes. We once had a colony of them roost in a tree in our backyard. I'm glad they decided to move on after a month or so, because even though I love the little critters they are noisy and extremely messy. Not suited for suburban living.
