In the early hours of 2 am in Kuwait on 02/03/13 after four months of working between two teaching/tutoring jobs, scuba dive training, writing the second draft of a potentially gripping debut novel and living in a comfort zone, I set off on the beginning of an exciting adventure of new experiences on the horizon, across Asia. My travels include Thailand, Cambodia, Hong Kong and half of China. the following is a sum up of the first half of week one starting in Thailand.
As a prelude, 9 months ago after my A2/year 13 exams finished and I left kings on my Gap year I hadn't anticipated the contents of my year of due to spending the past year focusing on school and univerity applications. I typed into Google search engine the words FILM INTERNSHIP and three links later I found something that caught my attentiuon ''Underwater Filmaker Thailand internship'' the rest of my research and planning is what led to this happeneing, a 3 month underwater videography internship on the island of Koh Tao in Thailand.
I set off at 6 am on a Qatar airways flight from Kuwait to Qatar for a connecting flight at 8 to Thailand- this was a very long journey of a little over seven hours. I arrived in Bangkok at 7 pm and following immigration/visas and luggage collection i excited the airport to night time at 32 degrees and boy was I suprised at how hot it was for night time. following a taxi ride through some of Bangkok's stunning skyscrappers and night scenes on the highway i made it to the Khoa San Road(a backpacker's destination i'd recomend) The company behind the internship paid for my accomadation at a splended hoitel called the Veingtai Hotel- Situated right in the middle of the Khoa San road.
I spent the night exloring, buying souveniers and eating fried thai seafood and noodles(Thai food is a cheaper option over western food if ever you are in Thailand and want to save money and use it wisely). Following this length walkabout and crowds and crowds of other international backpackers on the roadbritish, european and others. I retreated to my hotel. Around this time it was the night before a govoner election in the city which meant a ban on alcohol for two nights(although funnily enough there were ways around this such as labling Chang Beer with Pepsi on the cups)
The next day I spent the whole day traveling on a cheap unlimited tourist day pass on ferry up the Chao Phyrara river(150 Thai Baht) and had the experience of spicy food through the Wang Lan market for lunch and then saw the River City(a shoppingmall) and the Holy rosary Church(the oldest christian church in Thailand) at Pier Praya.
Adventourus for a change from the ferry in the rainy weather.....I took a Tuk Tuk!(for a twenty minute journey of 200 thai baht- 4.70 pounds). A three wheeled vechicle that serves as a taxi. I went to see the Grand Palace and Wat Pro Temple(two must see tourist attractions) and had an amazing experience at the architecture and sight of the buildings and took lots of pictures in awe and suprise.
After a very long day on the Chao Phyrara and excting scenery across bangkok in the rain,i returned to The Koh San Road and at 9pm that night I was put on an 8 hour bus ride to Chumpron in the south of Thailand. After hours of music, socializing with different people and an inability to sleep we made it to Chumpron at 4pm for a boat from the pier to take us on a two and a half hour journey to Koh Tao. This part consisted of strangely enough an espiode of the UK X Factor on replay on our tv monitors long with a part of the ceiling falling down and many people getting seasick.
Following an early arrival at Koh Tao I made it to my accomadation on the 4th of March, Asia divers resort. However my room wouldn't be ready until midday so I hade a mere four hours to explore the Sairee village, buy some food, swim in the resort pool and got loads of water due to the hot weather.
Then at midday when the room as ready I unpacked and crashed out for three gours. at 4pm I met the Extreme Gap(the gap year comapny behind the internship) Rep a lovely Miss Jai who introduced my to another extreme gapper on a seperate diving course from the Netherlands. I was told that the videography company would meet me tomorrow and that eveyrthing would fall into place after that. Miss Jai took myself and the other etreme gapper out for a Thai meal along the Sairee Beach. a strip of land covering half the island, we sat out to see men performing Poi with fireballs, parties, people laying infront of the sea and people watching an underwater film at nearly all the packed bars on the beach.
Overall the first three days of my travel had been very rewarding and I have high levels of excitment for the internship and the next three months on the island of Koh Tao, a reflection of Thailand's beauty, culture and warm wellcome to overseas travellers for holiday, diving or any other reasons. Already I have had a great time in Bangkok and Koh Tao
This will hopefully be the first of many blogs weekly that will be updated weekly with some pictures if time permits before the internship begins.
