Day 2 we went to another huge mosque with incredibly detailed mosaic (took lots of photos Yvonne!) then a long drive to meknes through undulating hills, sometimes arid and sometimes tilled land but always the fruiting cactus. And many many donkeys. At Meknes saw the three walled old town (11th century ruler wasn't the most popular guy around). He created a huge lake and magnificent stables for his beloved 1200 horses that no one is allowed to go in, and had an underground prison for the 65000 prisoners including Christian sailors captured lever time.
Had lunch in a great rooftop restaurant opposite the prison square, wonderful cool breeze. Then went for a wander and Jeannie found a great mosque with successive courtyards until the central praying chamber. Wonderful to experience.
After that another long drive (more donkeys) to volubilis. I thought volubilis was the highlight so far. We were walking through the reasonably intact ruins of a roman town in northern Africa where the Romans lived and farmed 2000 years ago. Amazing! Couldn't get enough of it.
After that drove through the hills at dusk until we reached Fes at twilight. Tonight we are staying at a riad in the old town, where no cars are allowed. Pretty funny scenes when we got out of the cr and the guy there to take our luggage starts packing it into the cart, and Mick grabs it back out and hugs it to his chest thinking he was a Bali-style porter who would charge extra. That guy could move, even loaded down with all of our luggage he was quizzing through the alleys and we were sprinting at times to keep up with him through the labryinth. More later.
