Athens, Greece - one of the birthplaces of western civilization and occupied for over 5000 years. We're up before dawn with Andre and Patricia for an early start to see the Parthenon, Acropolis and other antiquities, as well as free time in the old precinct - the Plaka. Port Piraeus where we docked this morning has operated for over two and a half thousand years.
d*** and Yvonne were up even earlier for a longer tour, and Mick and JanMarie left as soon as the ship docked to do Athens themselves.
The Acropolis receives 3 million tourists a year so going early was a real bonus. Kicked off my sandals and stood barefoot on the Acropolis feeling the cool marble and granite. Views were magnificent and the guide gave excellent insight into the history of Athens and the area around the Acropolis. A hill near the the Acropolis where the Citizens Forum stood was allegedly the birthplace of democracy with metal voting discs found dating to 5th century BC.
Dropped off at the Plaka shopping and eating district for a wander through after - very colorful.
Saw a brilliant observational comic last night on board talking about relationships. The women were laughing so hard they were crying. They put on great entertainment every night all over the ship.
We leave port mid afternoon for the long run up to Venice
