The weather has finally been kind to us just in time for a spectacular ride from Split, passed Dubrovnik and then to Cavtat.
With both Greg's action camera and Kerrie's small camera on standby we set off along the coast road. We had only been riding for about an hour when we were stopped by police - well, not stopped personally, everyone was stopped. We had reached Omis, apparently where the most dangerous pirates of the Adriatic came from. We didn't see any pirates today but we were in for a special treat. May 16th (today) was the celebration of the Omis Town Guardian and all traffic was stopped to allow the procession of religious leaders, school groups and local residents to parade down the street - what a treat, we didn't mind the delay at all.
Riding on, the cameras got plenty of use as we hugged the coast and then turned inland to avoid some road blockages and rode beside magnificent mountains. The closer we got to Dubrovnik, the better the views became. By the time we skirted the city Kerrie's camera battery had died! We passed by Dubrovnik and headed a further 20km south to the seaside village of Cavtat. This town was suggested to us by our avid travel friend, Delma. What a great suggestion. The village is beautiful, our apartment is luxurious and tomorrow we can go back to see the sights of Dubrovnik by watertaxi - no fighting the traffic, looking for parking or dealing with the steep roads - a win all round!
Our boat left Cavtat marina at 9:00 am and we were wandering the streets of Old City Dubrovnik by 10:00am after stopping at several little ports to pick up more passengers. Dubrovnik is one of Croatia's most popular cities and was crowded today even though it is not officially tourist season yet. The main gate is the Pile Gate but we entered the city from the opposite end after arriving in the old port. We walked along the main street Placa (Stradun) where both sides of the street are lined with beautiful stone buildings and churches. At the end of the street we came across Big Onofrio's Fountain which has featured in one of the Star War movies - don't ask Greg which one as he has never watched any of them.
We visited several of the churches including the Cathedral - again by European standards these Croatian churches are quite austere - not many decorations and few frescos. The outside of the churches had similar architectural features so it became a bit hard to tell which church was which. Finally, after morning tea and already having walked 7093 steps or 4.8km according to Kerrie's phone app we decided it was time to tackle the walk around the City Walls. As the walls are very steep that meant climbing up many stairs but we did stop often to take photos. By the time we had travelled the length of the wall we had walked 10099 steps or 6.8km - no mean feat for a couple of pensioners!
Many sections of the Old City have apparently been used in the filming of the Game of Thrones series - we will have to take the word of the tourist shops on this one as neither of us has seen any episodes of Game of Thrones.
Back on ground level after our epic walk we had lunch and returned by water taxi to Cavtat to do some washing and rest up before we head to Montenegro tomorrow. Tonight we will walk down the hill and have dinner down by the marina, but we'll be catching a taxi back up the hill afterwards!

Christopher Did they take pleasure in showing the bullet holes and saying who shot at them? That was the theme when I visited. Lovely harbour
