Today we spent a full day in Rhodes. After disembarking from the ship we walked along the waters edge to a nearby beach. On the way we walked through the ruins of an old fortress. A large piece of the fortress wall still stands. We were able to climb the steps up to the top of the fortress wall to get a better view of the surrounding ocean. It took us about a twenty minute walk before we arrived at the beach. It's set up similar to Nice with its sun loungers covering a large portion of the pebble beach. The only difference was that you didn't have to pay a ridiculous price to lie on the beach in Greece. There was also a five metre high diving board out in the ocean. Lots of people were swimming out to it to jump off. There were also a couple of lower platforms. Paul wanted to have a go so I stayed on the beach and took some photos. After putting lots of sunblock on I lay down on my towel to sunbathe. Because the heat is so hot you can only do it for so long before it becomes unbearable. A few of us went and sat down in the water, which was a much nicer temperature. The water isn't cold like in NZ so you can happily sit in the ocean without feeling cold after awhile. We sat, sifting through the pebbles, trying to find pretty ones. At 1.30pm we packed up our things and left the beach. Ross said he would walk us through the old medieval town and then show us a nice place for lunch where we could buy traditional Greek food. Walking through the remains of the medieval town was really interesting. A lot of the original walls are still standing. I'm not 100% sure if any of the walls have been partially reconstructed or not. Eventually we arrived at a small Greek restaurant for lunch. I've been skeptical about eating different meat since I arrived in Europe and have often ordered a vegetarian dish instead. There was a lot of the traditional burrito wraps with meat and chips in them so in the end I decided on a chicken burger. It took forever for our meals to come and when my burger finally arrived I was positive that it wasn't chicken. I asked the waiter, but he told me in a pretty short voice that yes it was chicken. I didn't argue the point and just left it to one side and ate the chips. Everyone kept saying that I shouldn't be paying for something I wasn't going to eat, but I didn't want to make a fuss. Shortly after that Ross started speaking to the waiter in Greek. He walked into the kitchen and after speaking to the chef came back to me to apologise, saying I had been given beef. At that point they were very apologetic and brought our some chicken pieces, tomato, fresh fries and some of the pita type bread to make a Greek burrito out of. Opposite we were having lunch there was another restaurant. Outside the restaurant, as well as in the small park beside it were lots of parrots perched on stands. There were a couple of blue macaws and a cockerteal. They were beautiful and the cockerteal was a real character.
