Byron Bay
Byron Bay is an awesome little place. Its basically all about the beach which is lovely, the town is small and has a very hippy feel. You see lots of VW camper vans cruising around and the whole place just has a lush atmosphere. We were only supposed to stay for a couple of days but stayed for 6, all we really did was chill out and play on the beach but it was fun! The nightlife is alright theres a few little bars so we headed out a couple of nights which was pretty funny. The hostel was cool it was right on the beach and they put bbq's on and had performers play so it was quite easy to get stuck here.
We went snorkelling in Byron. We got to wear wetsuits which were super sexy (or not quite) but meant you didnt have to swim you could just float and they kept you warm. The trip was supposed to be to see Loggerhead turtles (the massive ones) but we didnt see any of them when we were snorkelling- we saw one from the boat if that counts??? We still saw lots of cool fish and a wobbegong shark. They aren't meant to hurt anyone, but I was still very aware of the "shark" part of his title and was quick to leave him in peace after getting a quick look at him. The snorkelling was really good and we got our first taste of the East Australian Current- its really bizzare not being able to swim against it. We also saw some dolphins jumping up from the boat! The jet boat was fun in itself as it was all over the place. So snorkelling was well worth doing even though we didnt get to see the turtles!
Theres not too much more to tell about Byron because all we did was chill out, but we had an awesome time!
Nimbin- the strangest town anywhere in the world!
We went on a daytrip to Nimbin one day. The trip was excellent it was in a little minibus painted in hippy colours called "The Grasshopper" (The reasoning for title should become evident soon) with cool tunes belting out. We stopped at some waterfalls on the way, then we headed to a big dam in this lovely park. While we wandered around the park the coach driver, Steady, cooked a bbq. We had stopped for drinks on the way so we all had a good feed and a few drinks then we headed to Nimbin.
Nimbin is a little hippy town that REALLY wants weed to be legal. Everybody there just smokes regardless. The town is tiny but it still has room for numerous outlets selling weed related products, cafes and a weed museum. The museum is hilarious it is just full of campervans, newspaper clippings about weed and other hippy or weed related things. The stories behind Nimbin and its illegal ways are hillarious. They used to have a hill with a bell where somebody kept watch on the top and when the police drove into the town someone would ring the bell and everyone would know to stop selling or smoking until they left- apparently this went on for years until the police got wise to it. Now apparently its common knowledge that there are no taxis in Nimbin so if you do see a taxi it is an undercover police car and officers and any weed related activities stop. How random is this??? This was a great day out and just slightly different to the norm!
