Sydney (Briefly!)
We got the coach from Byron to Sydney. By this point we are pretty much living on noodles and were very skint. We really needed to get work quick! We spent a few days having a good look around Sydney, which was really nice. Just the usual touristy sites- Opera House, Harbour Bridge and Darling Harbour. All of it look amazing and its funny being there given how many times you will have seen pictures of it. The botanic gardens and Hyde Park are really cool too. Most importantly the fish and chips served from the cheap chippy in the Harbour are awesome and are definitely a highlight.
We had a wicked night out with some people we met in our room. In the whole of our travels we haven't met anyone from the North East (except a really posh girl who claimed she was from Newcastle- we didn't believe her though!) but in this one room there was 2 lads from Darlington and a girl from Hartlepool. The other people in the room were cool too so we ended up playing drinking games and going out.
So after we got our bearings of the city we decided to go for a talk about work and find out the details about bank accounts, tax and applying for jobs. There was a free session in one of the travel places so we went there. The guy giving it was really helpful but commented about the lack of jobs in Sydney and about the city being overrun with backpackers, he also told us the weather was going to get worse and that Perth on the other hand was really easy to get work and was much sunnier. We thought it would be a good idea to chase the sun and head to Perth! (Hopefully this guy was right as it was a 5 hour flight away!) When we tried to book the flights for the next day we had little success as we had spent all the money in Johns visa account and mine wasn't accepted. So I emailed my Dad (they do come in handy for something- hello Dad!) to ask him to put it on his card and take the money from my account. We struggled to communicate over the next day with the time difference so the next day we didnt get out of bed till late, busy nursing a hangover, assuming the flights hadn't been booked. When we eventually checked our emails we realised the flights had been booked and we were due to fly in a couple of hours! In a mad panic we had to try and get our money back on the hostel, get packed and get to the airport! We got there easily and so hopped on the plane to Perth.
So this meant we hadn't seen much of Sydney before leaving, Perth was a bit of a gamble, we had even less money and the route around Australia was not exactly logical! So needless to say we were really hoping Perth was going to work out a little better!
