We enjoy our final breakfast on the beautiful terrace at the Flycatcher Inn. Our destination today is Hotel Hacienda Tepich . We spotted this luxury accomodation on Booking . com for what looked like a real bargain but when we confirmed, the price jumped up to nearly three times what we'd been expecting and in addition, there was a no refund policy. We contacted the hotel but there was no reply. We decided to go there and query the price. It was a beautiful if rugged drive along lots of back roads to get to our destination...we managed to stop off en route at a small cenote, sinkhole in the limestone rock whereby you descent some precarious wooden steps to arrive at a crystal clear pool....we didn't dip into it as didn't have our swimming gear on but it was very beautiful.
On arrival at the Hacienda, none of the staff spoke English but we managed to explain the situation with our booking. The proprietor offered us two alternatives. The first was a full refund, the second was an upgrade to the master suite with free breakfast thrown in. The place was beautifully, restored but retaining its antique charm. Without too much hesitation, we opted to stay. We both thought it was a pretty fair solution to the problem and we told the elderly proprietor how much we appreciated his solutions. This place was significantly more expensive than what we had been used to paying but we thought we would treat ourselves for a bit plus it was late in the day to start searching elsewhere for a room for the night.
Much to my embarrassment, the next day I discovered that my internet booking site had been set to Guatemalan Quetzales rather than Mexican pesos. 1 Quetzales is worth 2.6 Pesos hence the confusion. I obviously hadn't booked anything since our yacht trip in Guatemala (Elaine is normally in charge of booking accommodation) and so my iPad was still on local Guatemalan currency. I apologised profusely to the proprietor at breakfast but he seemed happy that there was a logical explanation. He probably thought I was a right numpty!
