After the exciting 15 hour boat/bus/boat journey, we eventually arrived in Koh Phi Phi (PP). The nice thing about PP is that there are very few motorised vehicles. You can walk around and not worry about being run over, a welcomed break.
On arrival we were met at the pier by a representative of the accommodation that we booked. He was about half the size of me! After collecting the three of us and four others from the pier, he piled up all our bags in a trolley and started to push them to the hostel. He much have pushed 70-100kg up these roads for about 15 minutes.
A lot of the accommodation is in the centre of town but we booked some shacks built into the hills about 10 mins from the town centre. Great bungalows, a swimming pool and a bar. What more do you want?
We spent the afternoon playing in the pool before heading for our first night out in PP. It started with an all you can eat BBQ. The banner read "All you can eat 299 baht, includes free drink". When the guy told us it was 299 each, Albert could not help but ask "does that include the free drink". Really? Think about that one.
After dinner, we moved on to Reggae Bar, well known for its Muay Thai ring. Customers could get in and fight someone of a similar build. Who was going to fight? Albert of course! He got matched against a Chinese guy who was a similar height but a bigger belly. The fight lasted three rounds and was decided on number of hits. Albert won!! His advantage of speed definitely made a difference.
After finishing our buckets , off to the beach we went. On our way, Rosella popped into a bar to use the toilet and so what could Albert do whilst we were waiting. One of the street stalls had a big screen which was connected to the internet and so Albert sat down next to him and started showing him some of his favourite "adult movie" sites. The local was amazed, and started browsing in depth. Everyone walking by could see everything.
Down to the beach we went. We walked along, checking out the different bars. Slinkys was the place to go. Packed beach parties and more beers and buckets. This bar was a bit like a mini Full Moon party.
The following morning we were booked onto a Half Day Snorkelling Tour. We boarded the boat and headed straight for Monkey Bay. This is quite self explanatory - a bay with loads of monkeys on. We weren't allowed to get too close but our guide had a bit of a face off with a few monkeys.
Next we headed over to a snorkelling spot. The sea was not as calm as expected and our driver put his foot down. It became a free addition of white water rafting to the day. By the time we got to the snorkelling spot we were drenched. There was not many dry spots on the whole boat.
We jumped in the sea and this was possibly the best snorkelling I've ever done. Loads of fish and coral. Deep enough to dive down but not too deep that you couldn't get to the bottom. After about 10 minutes of enjoying the views the guide threw loads of pineapple in where we were and the fish surrounded us. Incredible views!
The final stop of the tour was Maya Bay, the setting for the film 'The Beach'. Two years ago, the boat drove in to the bay and we walked in from the sea. This year was different. It was a back entrance. We were dropped off in quite choppy water and had to swim in to a Thai built rope ladder. We struggled up the rope ladder and on to land. After a 5/6 minute walk we arrived at Maya Bay. Beautiful scenery, clean beach and wind that made the sand feel like getting shot by a small bb gun.
We hung around on Maya Bay before heading back the way we came. We got back to the hostel just as our first storm of the summer started which meant it was a perfect time to grab a nap.
That evening we headed for an Italian before getting back on it. We fancied a change from the Sangsom buckets and headed to Dojo Bar for strawberry daiquiri buckets. Delicious!!
Once the drinks were flowing we headed to the Irish bar. By this point Albert had drunk 3 buckets compared to Rosella and I sharing 3 buckets. This showed! Albert managed to fall off the table twice, once getting his leg stuck in the bench. Fortunately there was a nice strong Thai man on hand to help him out whilst I stood and laughed.
We again headed down to Slinkys bar and this is where drunk Albert had a great idea. To climb the big wooden post to get a better view. Doing this against the advice of Rosella and I, we had no sympathy when he fell off (on to a solid wooden stage).
That night carried on with Albert eventually sat down in a drunken state whilst Rosella and I kicked a ball around, had a dance and met a set of twins. The mentioning of the twins will make sense later.
The following day was a chilled out lie in followed by some relaxing all day drinking. Our night out followed the previous night. Dojos, Irish bar and Slinkys. We bumped into the twins again and they had a story to tell us. Whilst playing drinking games they decided to play a game of snap where the loser was required to get a tattoo of the winning snap. This is where the tattoo of the two of spades was revealed on the inside of one of their arms. f***ing mentalists!! That night we went out with Rolinde, a Dutch girl that we met previously and Rosella and I again danced like nutters.
As we left the Irish bar a fight broke out between some Brits that were trying to steal some alcohol from a bar and the locals. The Brits started it and got a well deserved bottle to the head. The thieving b****** eventually got dragged away by his mates with blood dripping down his head. Rule 1: You do not f*** with the locals!!
The night ended with one of the funniest things Rosella and I have ever seen. We walked past a man (probably British) urinating in the street. As we walked past I turned around and saw him still pissing but with his hands in the air. This is when his balance started to go. He started to wobble and as he started to fall forwards he put his hands out in front of him. Note to all men: if ever urinating in the street, make sure the wall in front of you is within reaching distance. The guy fell forwards and completely missed the wall. As he hit the floor, he rolled over and was still pissing......all over himself. I hope I've painted a great picture for all of you.
This morning we got up for the boat and it was raining. Hammering it down would be a huge understatement. It was possibly the worst storm I've ever been caught in. Carrying my bag to reception I was drenched. It was at that point that I realised that saying we wouldn't need raincoats to the others before we left may have been an error. Oops. We got in line for the boat and it was over an hour late. Why do I still get surprised by transport running late in Thailand?
Anyway, we are now sat on the boat absolutely drenched, heading to Krabi for a night before flying to the Philippines to meet the others.
