So, my last entry from Buenos Aires, Argentina and from South America as a whole. I'm actually really sad, I really really love Buenos Aires and feel like I'm just settling in. Definitely planning to come back here sometime, hopefully very soon, and do everything in Argentina that I've missed out on and just spend more time in the city.
After getting back to Buenos Aires on sunday I spent the day regaining lost sleep hours and running some errands around town, before heading out in a big group to a parilla (steak restaurant) for dinner. The restaurant (La Cabrera) has a great reputation within Buenos Aires, and is one of the more expensive parillas in town. We arrived at 9.30pm and had to wait til 12.30 for a table (ouch), not actually eating until 1am, but boy was it worth it... For 60 pesos (about a tenner) I had a 400g rump steak with sides, half a bottle of Malbec and 3 glasses of champagne... bargain. The steak was really good, definitely living up to the reputation of Argentinian beef, and the wine (cheapest on the menu, naturally) was fantastic as well. Altogether a brilliant meal, made even better by the fact that one of my friends, Ryan, had a bet on that he couldn't eat an 800g rump steak all to himself. Please, it wasnt that big, easily doable. After dinner we headed out for a few more drinks, before getting a relatively early night at about 5am... Well, that was the plan but when I got back to the hostel I accidentally woke up my new roommates, so we managed to blag some beers and stayed up chatting and drinking until dawn.
Next day I hauled myself out of bed and headed to Palermo Viejo, one of the only areas of the city that I hadn't yet been to. Palermo Viejo is the new, up-and-coming area of the city, very sloaney and very very nice - full of lovely restaurants, bars and bakeries, and really my kind of place. After spending a couple of hours wandering the streets and poking my head into juice bars and shops, I stalked it back over to Palermo to go back to the Japanese gardens for dinner - it's amazing how much you start craving any food that's not steak and cheese here! A good meal down, I went back to the hostel for the monday night party, which was, as usual, a slightly messy affair. Think I eventually got to bed at about 6am, which isn't bad considering, but definitely paying the price for it today. After dragging my sorry self up after far too little sleep, I subway-ed it back to Palermo Viejo to spend more time there. Had a beautiful salad for lunch (getting the antioxidants back up) and wandered a few shops in the trendy streets for a couple of hours. My flight is at 2am tonight (tomorrow?), but unfortunately the airport shuttle is at 7pm, so I have a long wait in the airport again. At least the massive fatigue from the night before means I'm bound to sleep on the plane tonight - can't imagine I'll have any problems there!
So, that's it for South America, how strange. Feels like I only got here a few weeks ago, and I'm already moving on. I am really really excited for New Zealand though - the prospect of fresh vegetables and slightly more moderate heat is very appealing right now - so guess I'll wait and see what Auckland has to offer!
