Caye Caulker is a beautiful gem of an island just off the coast of Belize. Its white sandy shores and crystal blue waters make it an irresistable place to stay. On our first day we headed straight to the beach to a place called "The Split" which is a northern point of the island that was split in two when it was hit by a hurricane. The island was quite literally torn into two pieces and instead of repairing the pier the islanders cashed in on their tragedy and let the destroyed pier remain as a place for sunbathers to lie. We lay on the pier and drank our rum punch occasionally taking a dip in the water and then headed back down the beach front to find more cocktails!
That night we celebrate the birthday of two girls on our trip! Veronica our guide went to a lot of effort and had two giant piñatas! One was a microphone and one was a guitar! She also had them a cake made with both their names on. So we sang happy birthday and ate lots of cake and then headed out for dinner. As a big group the general consensus was to have lobster which we did from a roadside bbq! There is nothing like sitting on the beach next to the caribbean sea eating bbq lobster out of a polystyrene box!
The next day we had a snorkling trip booked so we arrived early and got our flippers and snorkels fitted and then we boarded our boat. We quickly made claim to the front of the deck so we could lie in the sun and enjoy the view. After an hour we arrived at our first place. We jumped in and snorkled around the boat seeing all the pretty colourful fish! We thought ahead and purchased an underwater camera for the occassion!
At our next stop the boat was surrounded by sharks so you can understand that we were all pretty hesitant to get into the water even though we were assured they were harmless. This was a far more exciting snorkel and we got to see huge stingray which the guide actually picked up out of the water. The best part of it was the guide had food in his pockets so as we swam the fish followed!
The third dive was by far my favorite! We saw turtles, moray eel and more sharks! The turtles were just like the ones out of Finding Nemo, much to my delight! I didnt realise how much fun snorkling could be!
As we headed back to Caye the boat stuttered to a stop and we didnt miss the opportunity to jump straight into the water! We swam around and played and then got back on the boat for more rum punch and shrimp cerviche (which is becoming on of my favorite snacks!) Its easy to say that none of us wanted to leave that boat when we arrived back to the beach (except maybe Kella who suffered from sea sickness the whole time).
That night through a series of random events we found ourselves heading out to a club. This all began when Kella burst into our room followed by an australian man and an English woman who she had met on the way home from the shops and who desperately needed the toilet! They soon returned again asking us to go out so not wanting to miss an opportunity to party we got changed and headed to the beach. It turned out they were on a similar tour to us with a different company. The destination of choice that night was a Reggae Swing bar! From the name you would guess it was some sort of 50s music mixed with reggae but it was in fact a bar full of swings! The children in us instantly came out as we squealed with glee as we chose our swing of choice! We spent the night drinking and chatting with travellers sharing stories of the places we had been and the places they were going. All in all it was a fabulous night.
The next day we begrudgingly packed our bags once again to head to our final destination. It was tempting to ditch the tour group and commit ourselves to life as islanders but we decided against it which turned out to be a good thing because little did we know our destinations were just getting better and better!
