We rocked up to our hostel in Parnell pleasantly surprised how bohemian the area was. Although we were easily impressed having just spent a month in 1980's England. We enjoyed our first roast in eight months that evening, it was great.
We planned to spend the day sorting ourselves out and sending stuff home only to find out it was 'Auckland Day' a Bank Holiday. So that scuppered that idea! We threw ourselves, instead, into the festivities and headed to the marina to take in the Regatta.
After Jona got plucked from the crowd to participate in a street performance (so funny!) we headed for the safety of a restaurant garden overlooking the marina. We decided to celebrate our last day in New Zealand with a bottle of bubbles (to be honest it was no more expensive than the vino, but it looked good). Two bottles in and the Kiwi couple sharing our table decided to join us. It all went downhill from there. A brass band was involved, as was someone who could be Hunter S Thompsons Dad, more champers, a golf buggy and security guards. All of a sudden we were in a BMW heading for the Kiwi couple's house for yet more champagne. Jona remembers a fat cat and sunrise, or was it?! The decision to flee came quickly. Sunset can be very deceiving. Emma was almost tempted to let him go to the airport twelve hours before our flight!
