It was raining when I got up at 7 this morning, but thankfully not too heavily. I had a nice walk along the beach with two other Kiwi Experience passengers to meet up with our kayaking guide, Richard. He's from the Phillipines but was full of interesting stories about the area and Maori legends.
We were in double kayaks and thankfully the water was pretty calm so we had a great trip around the bay, towards the Abel Tasman National Park, with our target being the Split Apple Rock - a giant smooth rock, perfectly split in two, which really does look like a massive apple! There are lots of stories about how it got there but it seems no one really knows. We also explored some small caves and hopped off onto a secluded beach for free juice and cookies!
I had a lovely morning, it's only a shame that the two friends I did the kayaking with have now left with today's bus to the next destination, so I'll be joining a completely different bus load of people tomorrow.
Despite my complaining yesterday, I had a lovely run today. There are trails around but you just have to know which ones actually lead somewhere! At the end of Little Kaiteriteri Beach there is a hilly coastal path to St Stephen's Bay. I couldn't help but stop every few minutes to marvel at the views and take some photos! St Stephen's Bay is a beautiful, secluded beach and there wasn't another soul in sight. Another gem that you could only find by exploring on your own two feet.
I also went back to Withell's Walk for the second half of my run and found the actual footpath to the top of the hill and down and around the estuary. Much better than getting lost in a maze of mountain biking trails!
