We think it's time for another update because if we wait until we're leaving for Singapore, this entry will take about a week to read!
So we spent a week in Krabi where we mostly just sunbathed and ate food! We spent two nights in one hotel which was a little bit too far away from the main town to be able to walk, so we decided to book into another place in town. In hindsight, we wish we'd stayed in the first hotel and got the bus into town each day because this place was HORRIBLE! We were 'greeted' by a miserable man who barely said two words to us and all he seemed concerned about was making sure he'd got our money from the website we'd booked on. Our room smelt funny, the sheets were dirty and the bathroom was just a section of the room that had had a false wall put around it. It's safe to say we didn't spend much time in the room! We borrowed beach towels every day but on one day, instead of giving us clean ones, the guy just picked our dirty ones off the pile from the day before and gave them back to us! Disgusting!
Once we were out and walking around town, things were much nicer. There were a few shops and restaurants around and when sitting on the beach we found a place that let you borrow chairs, beach mats and pillows and gave you fruit..all for free! On the second day of being in the grotty hell hole of a hotel, we got a long tail boat over to Railay Beach where we spent most of the afternoon. It was quite nice there for a while but it soon started pouring with rain so we had to spend the rest of the time sitting in a restaurant.
After Krabi, we moved on to Koh Lanta which was really nice. We managed to book a much nicer hotel to make up for the slum we'd just come from so we were both much happier! The area was much quieter and chilled out, with a swimming pool looking right onto the beach, so this was where we spent most of our time. Well, I say we...I spent most of my time there while Sam was doing his open water scuba diving course. On the third and final day of the course we both went out on the boat to Koh Haa. Sam did his three dives to qualify with PADI and I snorkelled a couple of times. We've never seen water so clear before, it was absolutely crystal blue. We both saw lots of colourful fish and coral etc so it was a very nice day. We've now come up with an elaborate plan that Sam is going to become a scuba diving instructor and open scuba shops all around the world where we can then go and have free holidays! (Yeah, right!!)
The day after the boat trip, we lazed around the pool as we'd had a long day the day before. We decided to hire a motorbike for the day so that we could venture a little further out (...to the 7 Eleven for a toastie) and were thrilled when they gave us a bright pink, leopard print chav Mobil! Major man points for Sam :)
That night was when all our luck changed :( I won't go into all the details (most of you probably know already anyway) but I got rather ill. We had to be at reception at 7am to be picked up and taken to the boat to get to Phi Phi which I was not looking forward to, considering I'm not the best on boats as it is. I passed out on the boat and once we finally got to our room in Phi Phi, spent the whole day in bed. A great start!
The next day I was feeling a bit better so we took a walk into town for a while, booked a trip to Maya Bay for the day after and Sam also arranged to go on a scuba dive the day after that.
The trip to Maya Bay wasn't what we were expecting and we were a little disappointed with it to be honest. There was only one stop for snorkelling and when we got to Maya Beach (where The Beach was filmed), it was so busy with other tour groups, it spoilt it quite a bit. We're glad we saw it, but felt a bit conned with the trip in general.
On the way back to our hotel, I decided to buy a coconut to drink. So there I was, happily walking along drinking this coconut on the way to the hotel, when we turned a corner and saw a monkey. Straight away, I knew I was in for an unpleasant time and began to get rather scared. I tried to turn and walk away, but it was too late. It had seen the coconut. Sam basically walked off and left me (with the intention of getting it to go away but not doing a very good job) and all of a sudden, it ran for me, jumped up and grabbed the coconut. I let out the loudest scream ever, dropped the coconut and ran away crying whilst the monkey happily sat there eating the coconut, completely oblivious to the trauma it had just put me through. As you can imagine, I'm no longer a fan of monkeys!
As I said before, Sam had arranged to go on a scuba diving trip, but we found out the day before that, annoyingly, the company he qualified with in Koh Lanta didn't put his details on the PADI website in time, so unfortunately he wasn't able to do it. Yet another thing to add to the list of bad luck!
Our final full day in Phi Phi started off ok. We had breakfast and Sam was happy he'd been able to finally get some proper bacon and sausages. We then had a walk around town and Sam got a haircut. After a while though, he started to feel unwell so we went back to the room and his body decided it was his turn to be ill! The rest of that day and night was also spent in the room, in bed.
Overall, we haven't really had a particularly good time on Phi Phi, which is a shame because it's such a pretty looking island. The only thing though is that it is extremely touristy and busy. It's like walking down the strip in Malia or Magaluf.
We're now in Phuket, so hopefully our luck will change and we'll both be back to our normal selves again!
