Happy Birthday Nick!
We had a 7:30am breakfast of scambled eggs to start the day then had a short drive (60km) to Walvis Bay near Swakopmund - we stopped at a lagoon to see the Flamingos.
It's quite a sight to have a town like this in the middle of the desert, the town only came under Namibian control in 1994 from Sth Africa and its easy to see why Sth Africa wanted to hold onto it - there were a lot of big ships coming in and out of the port while we were there.
We then had a quick (30km) drive to Swakopmund - it's about the size of Gisborne and the biggest town we've seen since leaving Cape Town. It's exceptionally tidy - no rubbish around, everyone's grass is mowed and gardens are well kept.
After a quick tour of the town we went to the activities centre to see what was on offer - I booked a Quad Biking tour through the sand dunes and we both booked a village tour which we'll do on Friday.
We then made our way to our accomodation - no tents tonight, we are in little bungalows with 6 of us sharing. It's so nice to have a real roof over our heads, to be warm and to not have to worry about getting dressed up warm in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom!
We wandered around town and had some lunch, enjoyed reading our books in the sunshine and genrally just enjoyed being in one place for more than a few hours.
We headed out to Napolitana's for a group dinner - I had calamari steak which was tasty and Nick had the game platter again but it wasn't as good as what he had in Cape Town.
Dinner ended with the staff bringing birthday cakes out for Nick & Ian, a bottle of bubbles and some nasty looking shots for the birthday boys. We then carried on next door to a bar and had a few more drinks and games of pool to celebrate Nick's birthday in Africa.
