Another early morning, not as bad as yesterday but early enough. Logan woke us up around 4.30 and 5.30 we were on our way to King's Canyon. You might think it's named after a king but it isn't. The guy who discovered the canyon was called Gill but the man who supplied him with horses for his journey was called King. As thanks for his help he named the canyon after him.
The predicted temperature for today was 40 degrees. That's why we had to start so early, it's forbidden to start the canyon rim walk after 10am. It's just too hot! The walk started with a steep hill called "heart attack hill", the name suited it well, but it wasn't too bad. Then we started our journey along the rim of the canyon. We got to learn a lot about some of the plants and what the aboriginals used them for. There were some fern like bushes called scycads (we think) a species that has survived since the Jurassic era. One of them was 400 years old! There was an amphitheatre that was probably used for ceremonies. Nearby was a place where water actually collects and provided water for the animals an people in rough drought times. It was called the garden of Eden and was very nice. Logan told us that an aboriginal man had told him it was called the garden of Eden, but not the one in the bible! Because if they had been aboriginal the fig leaves would have been too small to cover their private parts, and before the snake would have been able to tell them to eat the apple, they would have killed and eaten it, haha!
The whole walk including stops took about 3 hours, and it's the best place we've been to in Australia, so interesting and amazing! We headed back to the resort for a dip in the pool and lunch. We changed to a different group, heading back to Uluru so we could catch our flight the next day. We said goodbye to everyone, then headed back to King's Canyon, but since it was after 10, we had to do a different walk. There's a creek that runs at the bottom of the canyon when it rains. So no water today, but a nice short shaded walk along the bottom.
Then we left for Ylara, a few stops along the way, then we were dropped off at our hotel free of charge! So we got upgraded and got an extra tour of kings creek. Emelie thinks it's Karma!
We had a quick look at the shopping centre, it's quite nice. Bought some stuff for sandwiches but forgot the juice. It's quite strange seeing a town in the middle of the outback. Had a chat with our room mates, a guy called Kentao from Japan and a girl from Switzerland called Debra. There was a thunderstorm nearby so we went up to the lookout over Uluru and watched the lightning show, brilliant! After that it was time to sleep in a real bed with a pillow and everything!!
