G,day from Western Australia! Still having a fab time, unfortunately got less two months in Oz. Since our last update,we have been non stop, trying to fit in as muuch as possible. Our van eventually got fixed, after 9 days in Nyngan. The heat became unbearable for us there, with temperatures reaching 45 and only dropping to about 30-35 at night. We were in our tent, so you can imagine how much sleep there was between us in those 9 days. The evening before we left Nyngan, there was a massive storm unlike anything either of us had seen before. There was thunder, lightning, horizontal rain, wind and huge hailstones (so big they actually chipped our windscreen), electricity was cut, trees were being split and fieds were flooding. Luckily the strom had been predicted so we managed to get the tent down and run under a shelter. After about 5 mins we realised that it wasn't going to 'blow over' and I ran to the van, whilst Fuz hung around trying to figure out how he was going to save his surf board! I drove round for him, but by the time I got to the shelter, the area was flooded so i couldn't pull the van in and there was no way he was leaving the board so he took a run for it and made it to the camp kitchen without being struck by lightning (carrying surfboard and tent!) The storm lasted for about an hour and a half and we decided that we needed to find alternative accommodation at the sight. We checked into a cabin for the evening and the owner 'kindly' gave us $10 off (she was all heart...). So we left Nyngan the next day and can't say we were in the least bit sad to do so. It took us almost 6 days of constant travelling in the bush and dessert to get to our next proper stop. We used campsites and rest stops along the way for sleeping, but it was unbearable at times in the van because of the heat. We drove a road along the Nullarbor plain which is basically a desert and seen lots of flora and fauna including roos (generally alive), lizards, Asian cows, regular (as in the ones we see in Scotland), emus and camels. Some of the towns in the outback that we passed through were pretty run down and very isolated and fuel was up 50% on the city prices. We were initially going to go only as far as Perth, but Fuz decided he wanted to dive from the Ningaloo reef, so we drove a further 1000km on from Perth, but it was definitely worth it. Coral Bay is beautiful, with white sand and crystal clear waters, it was like driving into paradise. It was like an oasis in a desert when we drove over the top of a hill and looked down upon it - and there was a beautiful cool breeze which added to our delight! As soon as we got the tent up, we went straight infor a swim. It was much cooler than anticipated, but defintely a welcome change from the week of over- heating we had just had. The water was really clear and you could see fish and coral without even needing to get into the water. We were in Coral Bay for 3 days and just spent the time bathing and snorkelling. Fuz went for a dive off the Ningaloo reef and said it was amazing. It was his first dive since getting his certificate in Malaysia, so he was quite nervous, but was lucky to be buddied up with a guy who had done loads of diving and was happy to help him. He had two dives and said by the second one he was much more relaxed, totally loved it and the reef was beautiful. After leaving Coral Bay, we headed back south to visit the dolphins at Monkey Mia. Monkey Mia is a resort that has a dolphin feeding programme so we got there for 7.30am so that we could see it. We had heard mixed reports about it, but in terms of the feeding, we were not disappointed. There was about 10 dolphins, including a couple of baby ones that come everyday to get fed. We were only a few feet away from them and they spent a lot of time swimming around the bay. We also went on a boat trip to see the dugong (we seen a few, but they were really far away so could have been anything really!), but it was a bit disappointing and we've decided that we are a bit boat tripped out for the time being.
