Emma & Fuzzy's Travels
Kia Ora everyone! It is Sunday morning in NZ, fuz has headed off up the slopes and I am having a bit of a lazy day. We have done loads since the last update, including moving rooms and hostels umpteen times! Queenstown has been so busy, as has most of the other resort areas. We have satyed in a few YHA's now and can confirm that they are the 'daddy' of hostels. The facilities and staff are spot on and the location for them is always lovely. We are currently in a place called Wanaka, which is a really small town, but is central to two of the main slopes - Treble Cone and Cardrona. Unfortunately the weather has been really changeable so everywhere was shut down yesterday (it's as bad as Scotland for the weather!). The Dutch lad we met a couple of weeks ago (Paul) has been travelling with us, so Fuz is happy he has someone to play with on the slopes, so they are off doing jumps today. Apart from hitting the slopes we have been trying the other delights Queenstown has to offer. A week ago, Fuz did the Nevis bungy, which is the 2nd highest in the world - 134m!!! I spectated which was scary enough seeing as I had to be harnessed just to spectate! He said it was amazing, the best thing ever. I couldn't believe how calm he was prior to doing it, I was a nervous wreck! Think he may be turining into one of those extremist types! The day after the bungy we went to the snow park to watch a Billabong competition which was really good. Some of the stunts these people are pulling on snow is unbelievable. Seen quite a few being carted of in the snow ambulances, which isn't so good. MTV was at the comp and a band called Elemeno P, quite a famous one over here apparently. The day after that I decided I needed a bit of pampering and sent the boys off up the slopes while I got a cut and blow dry and had some retail therapy. I felt like a new woman by the end of the day! It was after seeing all the glamour pusses at the MTV thing that I decided I needed a bit of 'freshening up'! Went out that night with new 'do' and clothes and felt fairly girly again! It's not good hanging out with smelly boys alll the time. Had one or two 'teapots' between us (basically cocktails in a pot) and Paul and I decided we could do the bungy! I really shouldn't drink! At the time I was all brave, but woke up next morning having palputations and struggling for air just at the thought of it! Luckily hadn't bookled anything, and there was little said about it the next day! After our night out we went on a thing called the 'Shotover Jet' which is apparently the fastest jet boat ride ever. It was great, didn't think I would like it, but speeding about the river and being spun 360 was actually a good laugh! Did a bit of sightseeing over the following few days and stayed at a place called Te Anau (YHA was fabulous and had a six bed dorm to ourselves) from which we went on a tour of 'Doubtful Sound'. It was beautiful. The scenery is something else. We went on a boat and viewed the huge mountains with waterfalls, had a pod of dolphins swimming around the boat (amazing!) and spotted seals basking on rocks. It really was something else. Lots of people say Scotland and NZ are similar, but I think NZ is much more dramatic (Fuz says it's like Scotland on steroids!) and extreme. The roads are something else to drive on aswell. Everywhere is so steep. We have a Nissan Sunny hire car (van in storage in Oz) and it has taken a serious beating in the last three weeks. There are loads of unsealed roads that don't have barriers up and all sorts, scary stuff. At least we haven't had to put the snow chains on recently. We had to in the first week but it's not snowed much since. After Te Anau we went back to Queenstown. Went to the bird sanctuary and they had on a traditional Mauri show, which was great. They had audience participation, which had me doing a dance (really badly) and then the boys got up to do the Haka, which was hilarious!! One of the photos look like they re doing the YMCA instead of a scary war dance. Class! We walked up to the Gondola, which has views all around Queenstown and the walk nearly killed me because it was so steep. At the top there is another bungy jump, so Paul and I started talking about doing one, whilst Fuz mocked us and called us p**** s and such likes. Anyway, the bungy was fully booked (shame!) so we couldn't do it, but we agreed we would go to the bridge the next day and do the one there. Fuz was having none of it of course, seeing how we had talked about it all week and still not done it. However, the next day we drove out to the bridge bungy.... and did a bungy!!! I can't believe I actually did it! The build up was chronic, starting from when I woke up in the morning. I couldn't eat breakfast, couldn't concentrate, couldn't speak to anyone etc. Got to the bridge, watched a couple of people jump, paced the floor, sat with my head in my heads, breathed very loud, used the bathroom a million times and then eventually jumped off my seat and said 'right, am booking it' and proceeded to do so, much to Fuzzy and Paul's disbelief! Paul had agreed that he would do it if I would, so he was doubly shocked! Got to the top of the bridge, swore quite alot then after 5..4..3..2..1..jumped!! Didn't make a sound, to the point Fuz was concerned i was still alive I think! Mental! It was 43m and was over in seconds, but was the scariest/ best thing I have ever done. Still can't believe I did it. Even got the t-shirt and DVD to prove it (will post pics of both jumps soon). Paul jumped after me which was hilarious! He literally jumped (your supposed to dive) and then let out a huge scream not once, but twice! We watched the DVD's of them yesterday and mine shows just how terrified I was - my face is pure white and I look like I am going to cry, but did it anyway! Don't think I will be doing any more in the near future, but pleased I did it and can understand what Fuz meant when he said it was the best feeling ever (I think that's when you realise you are still actually alive!).
Anyway, less than a week to go in NZ then we will return to Oz and our van and, unfortunately, work.
Hope veryone is okay, thanks for the messages (was worried you were ill Theresa, but pleased to see you're back on it!). Hope the big party went with a bang, am sure we will hear all about it. Cheerio from NZ, Em and FuzXXXX
