After a relatively quick/easy drive from Melbourne, we arrived in Australia's capital. It is probably the easiest city in the world to get around, because everything is in circles around the parliament house. It is very well kept and completely manufactured, in that it was specifically designed to be the capital city. There is very little traffic on the roads and it has a kind of 'stepford wives' feel about the place. Although there is little traffic, someone managed to run into the back of us while we sere waiting at an intersection...just what we didn't need when we had the van up for sale and less than two weeks to sell in it! Typical! We had done 30,000km and only had about another 200 to go. The woman who hit us accepted full responsibilty through lots of tears and shaking 'confessed' that she wasn't feeling well, was running late to pick up her child from nursery and in fact that she felt she shouldn't actually have been driving at all (at this point I also noted that she was not wearing any shoes). Anyway, after swapping details, lots of heavy sighing and 'why us?" expressions we headed to our hostel and started the process of reporting the accident. We had to go to the police (who could hardly pull themselves away from their chinese takeaway to help us) and then draw a picture of the incident (not an easy task for two people who still draw in 'stick'). Anyway, to cut a long story short, the insurance process was incredibly easy. They offered to fix the van for us, or we could take $1800 and the van and fix it ourselves (or more likely get someone else to do it). Every cloud and all that! The rest of Canberra was a bit of a rush as we only really had one day there. We went to the institute of sport which was interesting, but we were a bit disappointed that we had a 'walker' show us round. Not really our idea of an elite athlete - someone who bunches their arms up and walks really fast like they are 'chewing' on something, but a nice guy all the same! We also went round parliament, which is again really well maintained with helpful staff but everything had an eerily 'perfect' feel to it(something us Scottish are obviously not used to!) Anyway, after a busy day, we got back on the road and headed home (to Sydney).
