Where The El Am I
This weekend we have ventured out of La Paz on a 3 day tour of the dessert and salt flats at Uyuni towards the south of Bolivia.
Following a 10 hour bus journey from La Paz, Murray, Angie and myself met up with the other 3 members of our tour group!! Fernando the Brazilian and a Czech couple (I never did get their names) who turned out to be the most annoying people in the world!! If it wasn't kissing they were nibbling ears holding hands and doing other put you off your lunch type things!! But that didn't really matter as the trip was fantastic!!
Day 1 took us across the salt flats a 1200 square Km lake which has dried up leaving just the salt!! The sun was so strong there was no way the sunglasses were coming off for long! We visited a hotel made entirely of salt and the only island on the salt flat which was covered in Cactus's! We moved off the Salar and into the dessert spending our first night in the small town of San Juan! Accomodation was very basic and a lack of electricity had us in bed by 9PM the 2 bottles of red wine had us asleep by 10 past!!
Day 2 we moved through the desert climbing to 4200m by the end of the day! We passed various lakes and saw lots of flamingoes before reaching our second stop at Lake Colarado. This is a lake coloured Red by the various minerals contained within it!! This accomodation was even more basic and Czech mans snoring meant no sleep for anyone!! Fortunately though we were up at 4.30 to see the Geysers in the early morning!! These were a great sight but at 4800m and before sun rise it was bloody freezing and we were glad to be in the hot springs before breakfast time!! We then began our journey back up to Uyuni passing Lake Verde green from algi and despite being minus 20 degrees unable to freeze because of the minerals!!
The rest of the day was spent in the jeep, special thanks went to our tour guides as they were the funniest couple!! And by sunday morning we were back in La Paz!!!
