We arrived in Pai after a 4 hour minibus journey up some very winding roads; it took most of our effort to avoid being car sick!!! When we arrived we wandered around until we found a place to stay at Baan Pai Cottage in an interesting wooden hut which was quite rustic to say the least. Shortly after having a wander around the very quaint town and getting caught in a rather heavy down pour we went on an Elephant trek. This was really good fun although quite scary as we just sat on a blanket on the elephant and we almost thought we were going to fall off numerous time as the fairly old girl made her way down some very steep and narrow paths. It was really nice and very scenic (although quite painful on the bum). After walking through the woods for half an hour or so we then went and played in the river. The old girl threw us off her back and in to the water several times and then sprayed us when we were not looking. It was quite good fun although after three of four times of being thrown in we decided enough was enough and headed back to the elephant camp where we again were caught in the rain. That night after a very long and hot shower (we smelt very badly of wet elephant, not nice) we had a relaxing evening and even managed to enjoy a rather chilly glass of red.The next day and a half we hired a scooter which was great fun, it was so nice to get out and about and get to see a little more of Pai. We visited a few waterfalls, Wats (temples), rode around the county side and even I had a go, which made Chris very nervous. We also found a really cute coffee shop which sold really good ice coffee and had the most stunning views. We spent quite a bit of time here enjoying the scenery. The second day we also came back to our favorite little coffee shop, this time Chris noticed that they did horse rides which we thought would be a great idea through the lovely countryside (wrong!!!!) We got on our horses, they were so small I really didn't feel too safe, any how we made it down a dirt track so all was going well until another horse decided to wind my horse up which resulted in my horse throwing a wobbly and throwing me off in the process!!! I was a little bruised and bumped but mainly in shock, after that Chris and I decided enough with the horse riding and headed home for a stiff drink! I also nearly got run over by a scooter so not really having the best day. Other than that we had a great time and got to see lots of lovely scenery so we were happy. The next day we headed off early to the Thai-Laos Border which was a good 8 or so hours in a very full and hot mini bus stopping at Chiang Mai for a brief lunch. We finally arrived at the Thai border Chiang Kong at about 6ish and checked in to a very basic hostel for the night. Had dinner at the hostel only because it was included then headed in to the small town to buy provisions for the next day on the slow boat and chilled in a cute bar on the river side enjoying our last night in Thailand.
