When everyone always says that the Red Sea has some of the best diving in the world, they are seriously not exaggerating. We decided to go to Dahab, not expecting anything of the town itself and hoping to do a couple of dives while were there. But once we arrived in Dahab we realized that we had found our little oasis in Egypt. Dahab is Koh Samui (without the people) meets Arabian Nights - coastline studded with floor-cushion strewn restaurants, shisha pipes, fresh seafood and unbelievably clear turquoise water. We spent most of our days just lying around, walking through the market and learning about the intricacies of the shisha pipe and the art of Egyptian tea drinking from our new friend Ahmed. We slept a lot, took long walks on the waterfront and then of course, there was the diving. I can't wait for the day that it becomes possible to speak underwater while diving - there were so many things that I wanted to tell Joey while we were under the water: what an amazing privilege it was to be able to do this, here, in this awesome place, pointing out the eels, lion fish, nemos (WE FOUND HIM - ALL OF HIM) and the forests of coral. We are ofcourse amateur divers, so we do not have much to compare this to, but this is definately a place that we can say looks exactly like the pictures. We were swimming with schools of baracuda, and at some point were caught among thousands of little silver fish that were surfing the current. We went to a site called Eel Garden, where the little eels pop up from the sand like something from a science fiction movie. Unfortunately we do not have a camera for scuba (yet), so I downloaded the photos from the internet to give you an idea of what it looks like.Suitably impressed, well rested and ready for the 9am 8 hour bus ride back to Cairo, we left Dahab with beautiful underwater (mental) images and big plans for a diving safari in the future. One more time in the car with Sam-the-driver-from-hell, we were very happy to arrive at Cairo airport in one piece, ready for the 3am flight to London and western civilazation!
