How to round out a wonderful trip around Europe? A good Olde English pub. The Rose & Crown on Clay Hill just outside Enfield, near the wonderfully named Hilly Fields Park and Beggars Hollow. This pub dates back to the early 1700's and is linked to the Highway Robber d*** Turpin. He originally worked as a butcher but then found it easier as a horse thief, burglar and highway robber. Some accounts have Sick or his grandparents as landlords of this Inn. d*** Turpin's life and fictional 200 mile ride from London to York on his horse Black Bess, was romanticized 100 years after his death. He wasn't a good guy, he stole a lot of horses (a very serious crime in the day) a lot of other stuff and was responsible for a handful of murders.
The pub food was perfect, it was lunchtime but they were serving a "full English" - a wonderful breakfast including beans, bacon, fried bread and fried tomato (I still don't know why the tomato needs frying). An ideal setup before the hour and more on the London Underground and the flight back to Boston on our big Black Bess (otherwise known as BA flight 239)
