It was an early start for Edd and I - we had a Skype appointment at 9am with a couple we'd found on the internet for a house share in Melbourne, so had to get showered and coffee'ed before we went online.
I walked down to the restaurant and asked for 2 teas and a coffee, which I was told would be brought to our room. I then walked back to our room and continued to tidy up (I know right, me tidy?!) by putting our clothes and things in the cupboards.
Edd's dad then knocked on our interlinking door and announced that tea had been served on their little balcony. We took the laptop through to where they were sitting and linked up to the internet; it was only 8.45am, so still had a bit of time to kill before our meeting.
The coffee was delicious, but the tea needed another tea bag in the pot - it was a bit like dishwashing liquid. We got a Skype request, which we added and then the call came through.. 25 minutes later we were saying goodbye to our new housemates in Melbourne, the house was amazing, it ticked all the boxes and more (it was 100m from the beach, there was a walk in cupboard and they had a dog, incredible). We were relieved to have found somewhere to stay and surprised at how incredibly easy it had been; my flat hunting in London, when I moved in with a friend, had been complicated and stressful: finding anywhere semi decent for us to stay had been difficult, the flats were like trash heaps or the areas were the kind you'd need to be teleported in and out of and then the estate agents were basically the worst kind of human. This had been simple, easy and pleasant, what a difference!
We were both upbeat after our meeting and all went for some breakfast. We were served a plate of fruit first, with Edd's folks ordering crepes and Edd and I ordering the 2 egg any style option - I gave my 2 eggs to Edd; he in turn traded his hash brown and sliver of bacon. I definitely got the better deal.
We all then went back to our rooms, collected our things and made our way to the beach - Edd and his dad going for a snorkel, while his mum and I got comfy on the sun loungers. I sat and uploaded all the blogs that had been written en route to Bali, and upon finishing, joined Edd's mum in sun soaking.
Edd and his dad had come back relatively soon after leaving, apparently the water was too shallow and the waves that broke 250meters from the shore threw you into the coral and rocks. Edd had attempted to swim through and got a bit cut up on his knees and legs, his dad had turned around and aborted the operation entirely.
We then all sat on the loungers, having had lunch in our resort and a swim in their pool, until about 4.30pm, when the sun disappeared behind the coconut palm trees. We went back to our rooms, had a shower and then went for a walk along the street.
There wasn't much in terms of things to look at / buy, so we gave up and took a dirt road that lead back to the beach, walking along the footpath in the direction of our resort. We stopped at one of the other beautiful resorts that advertised having a happy hour; we all ordered cocktails and were disappointed with what we received. We decided to go back to our resort and have dinner as we at least knew the food there was amazing and the drinks were a good quality.
We walked back to our resort, with the moon flickering across the waves that crashed onto the shore, almost looking like plankton that lit up when disturbed. Some areas along the walkway were lit better than others and I hoped there were no snakes about to pay us a not-so-friendly visit. We got back and asked for them to set up a table for us; we'd be back in 10 minutes as we needed to put a few things down and Edd's mum wanted to change.
Our table was beautifully set and we ordered our dinner, with a bottle of delicious rose wine to go with it. Edd and I were no longer used to dining in style and had heart palpitations at the thought of a bottle of anything, but water. We'd even sat and discussed which of the places on the street we could probably eat at and where the street food might be on our way to the resort the day before, only to then realise we did not need to clock such places!
The food was delicious, as usual, and we moved to beach loungers to finish off our wine, ordering hot drinks before we went to bed. We walked back to our rooms just gone 11pm and said goodnight; we'd had a lovely, relaxing first day in Bali, we'd secured a place to stay for our first year in Melbourne and we'd eaten and drunk more in one day than we usual did in 4. The weight Edd and I had lost was lurking ever nearer - at least if we put a bit on, our clothes would stop falling off!
