dzasta travels
The flight here was only just over an hour and I had the whole row to myself. The flight was half empty. When we were coming in to land I could see the spray from the falls in the distance, I just couldn't get a photo. Visa was easy and $30 (I was expecting $55) but the taxi was more expensive at $30 but it was 21km to town and every taxi had the price on the window.
I am staying at Vic Falls rest camp for $25 I get a run down old tent all to myself. I tried for a room but they didn't have one. The tent is boiling hot during the day and was freezing cold last night. I went to bed early (about7 local time) cos I had been on the go for about 42hours. I woke up a few times in the night and could hear the sound of the falls. Considering they are a couple of km away they are very loud.
I was trying to stay awake so I walked to the falls in the arvo. On the way I saw a bank and decided to go and change some money. DER What a ********??? I realised when I was waiting for the person in front of me getting her money I don't need to change. The Zimbabwe dollar is worthless and they use US dollars. Later in the arvo I could have bought one trillion Zimbabwe dollars for $2US. Anyway I walked to the falls and was thinking yea yea waterfalls so what? They are amazing, massive, blew me away, unbelievable! I cant describe how massive they are. It is like it is raining when you are a km away. I still have more to check out so I will post up again tomorrow and some pics if I can. There ware some kids bungy jumping off the bridge. It is huge and you can have that on your own. They also had canyon swing and a tame zip line. It is amazing to see all the stuff here just because of the falls and the tourists it attracts. The helicopter flights are making millions, they never stop.
I caught up with the Intrepid tour guys this morning. The people on the tour seem to be all about my age and they have already done 20 days from Cape Town. Looks like the next leg is going to be only a few and the last leg is fully booked so there will be 24 for those 20 days. The last person to arrive is an Irish girl Name Dara, so we did our induction then Victor (your guide) gave us $30 ea to go to the falls. I have been that way twice before so I led the way. (we had to leg it) We were walking along talking and I looked up and there was an elephant on the path. The locals were all standing around looking and too scared to go past. We decided to go around the long way. The falls are amazing from the national park. we were lucky we both had poncho's cos at one point the spray was like rain. There was so much spray in the air there were rainbows forming everywhere.
After the falls we decided to walk to the bridge to watch the bungy jumping. You get surrounded by young boys trying to sell bracelets, carvings and money. I keep saying no cos I have 7 weeks to go and I dont want to carry it. Dara bought a bracelet, starting prince $18, but discount for you friend to $12. She ended up paying $4. On the way back my mate Tomato was trying me again and I pushed him as hard as I could. I eventually bought 4 bracelets and 2 necklaces for $10. When he agreed to it I felt bad and had to buy them, even tho I didnt want them. I didnt feel too bad to pay more.
I went with Dara to book a canoe trip for tomorrow and she had to go to ATM. The machine looked like it did the transaction but she got no money. we went to another machine and same thing. It appears the ATMs here have a $50 limit on them but they dont tell you. I bought some local money. I got (will have to write it cos too many zeros) 50 billion 565 million and 200 thousand dollars for $2us. What a bargan!!. We had dinner at Lolas a local place and a bit expensive but an experience. Dara is a vego so she had spinnach quiche and I had the local specialty Mopani worms for entre and croc for main. The worms were disgusting. They looked bad and smelt the worst. They tasted bad and were like rubber. I nearly yacked trying to get the first one down. Needless to say I didnt finish them.
When we got back to camp Victor was no where to be found and the truck was locked with all our gear inside so we couldnt go to be. We were directed to every bar in the neighborhood and eventually found him in the food hall..
Tomorrow we off to Hwange National park to see the elephants.
I will put up some pics as soon as I can find a computer to do it maybe today

Chris&Kate Sounds awesome cant wait to see the waterfalls!
Aprille The waterfalls sound wonderful. Glad you got there safe and sound. Xx
Ngaere Good choice not to bungy - the rope snapped last year or the year before - on an Aussie girl. The falls are awesome - much better Zim side than Zam side. Good to hear the guys on the truck are your age. Enjoy the ride.
Ashlea Sounds amazing!
Ashlea Glad you made a friend (of course it's a young girl!) and that you have had some great experiences already! But worms.... Really :/
Ngaere Hope you enjoyed the up close and personal with the elephant - expect more. Great photos Don't spend all your money at one shop
