I got here about 10 last night. Shenzhen is the 5th biggest city, 4th biggest airport and richest city in China and for me a transit stop. It used to be a nowhere till 1980 when the Chinese govt made it a SEZ, special economic zone, to compete with Hong Kong. Most of the city is fairly new but a bit grubby, like most of asia. They now have special tax breaks and a lot of money swirls around the city. You can even get a Shenzhen only visa from Hong Kong.
I got up early this morning cos Ive got a shopping marathon and have to get new jacket, watch and book to fly to Liijiang. I caught the underground from the hostel to the city, that wasnt as hard as I expected it to be. About 25 min on the train to Dongmen and I was too early so I got back on the train and went to Lou Hu. Lou hu is the border with Hong Kong, you can cross back and forward from here if you have the right visas so I thought there would be a couple of travel agents there that could book my flight. Sure enough there was one there and the flight is booked. The jacket and watch were more of a problem and I still dont have them. I did get a guy down to $50 for a 3G iphone but it sounded too dodgy and I dont know enough about them. Back to Dongmen for a better look. The place is just a maize of shops but nothing I wanted. Dongmen is all about bling. Mirrors and lights, really not the magic kind, and some of the shops were too bright without sunnies. I went into one and had to get out cos it was soo bright.
Last night I stayed at the Loft youth hostel. What a **** place. The bed was hard as a rock, it is very noisey, I was lucky I was in a room by myself cos I grabed the blankets from the other bed to keep me warm. They wouldnt negotiate on the price even though it was after 11 when I arrived, breakfast wasnt included in the price and they charge 2 yuan for storage of luggage for the day. And this is their rubbish computer I am using to bag them out and it keeps putting double letters.
Ive had enough of this **** computer, I will add pics when I get a chance.
I fly to Lijiang (up in the mountains near Tibet) tonight with Eastern Airlines will probably stay at Mumma Naxis if I can get in.
