Kolins Travels
Well I've finally got around to getting this entry on line on this journal!
Bali is a lot bigger than I had first thought with plenty of surfing opportunities and dive spots. Because of my burn still festering on my leg I decide to bypass these activities and get a jeep to cruise around in which I named Bernard. I started from Kuta which has been the target for 2 terrorist bombs over the last 4 years. Kuta is full of people but I wish to explore! Not wanting to tempt fate I leave Kuta heading up to Ubud which is a more cultural town where you can concentrate on Yoga and walk through "The Monkey Forest" which literally looks untouched for the thousands of years it has been there. Ubud also gives me the opportunity to test out my skills for driving Bernard down a one way street in the wrong direction!
Further on I head North via Tampaksiring to see Gunung kawi temple - a place of great peace with Bali stone carvings in a cliff face dating back to the 13th century. ( I think) Heading further north to the Kitamani area I headed to Mt Batur - one of Bali's live volcanoes to experience the most inspiring sunrise I have ever seen in my life above the clouds overlooking Batur Lake. The pictures in the album for this do not have any comparison for the real thing! Getting to the summit involved a hardcore 3am start with a trek in the dark... but was so worth it.
The next stop is Lovina heading North West - these beaches are black volcanic sand - it's a nice place with a s*** coloured beach! The highlight here is to see wild dolphins in the morning jumping out of the sea racing about! A boat takes you out and the dolphin search is on...again worth an early start.
Life and travel is all about ups and downs - I spent a day driving round the east coast of Bali - I headed to Ahmed on recommendation only to find it was rubbish!. Then I had to bribe a policeman who took the money I had left for accommodation for the day! I was advised to offer money when I rented the jeep - the police are well corrupt out here. This Policeman waved me on at a red light, being slightly confused I drove Bernard through only to be stopped for going through a red light further down the road! He said " I take you to Police station" I said "I give you money!"
So, thanks to the good ol Bali PD I then needed to find a cashpoint...could I find one that took Visa or was not malfunctioning? No is the answer- I had to drive back to Denpasar! Putting this into prospective I drove around 470KM on Bali with 200KM being on this said day! Still, running on vapour and not a ruperia to my name my Credit card comes through!
Driving round Bali away from the main Kuta/ Denpasar area it is so quiet at the moment - there is hardly any tourists and restaurants are empty but you can chat to the locals - this is the effect of the bombings on this island. Because of this you get continuously hassled to part with your money when you have it - when I was searching for money people didn't seem to be particularly helpful! Driving in Denpasar in the dark is absolutely mental but I managed to navigate to Sanur for accommodation. Sanur beach is beautiful and I was left in peace for a while. Indonesian women seemed to be fascinated with me and kept taking my picture! I remember sitting on the beach in just my boxer shorts getting ambushed for pictures trying to keep the crown jewel out of the picture! Ha ha..anyway I have a night out drinking in Legion north of Kuta and on to OZ ..goodbye to chickens, cattle and bikes running amock on the roads...maybe
