Well here we are! already in Darwin! But heres a recap
On packing up in Katherine , we fuelled up and headed north once again! We headed into Kakadu National Park. We took the first turn off into the Park at Gunlom ( Waterfall Creek ) which was only 40 kms off the Kakadu Highway! However it took us about 40 minutes to do the first 26kms!!! it was soooooo corrugated! I laughed all the way -thought it was the funniest thing! I have never been on a more corrugated road - even on Kangaroo Island ! I reckon most of the way was only 40kms/hour! Poor van!! hahahah and we want to do the Gibb River Road! hahahah apparantly thats how that road is!
So after a big shake up we arrived at Gunlom pretty early so we could spend the arvo here. It was soooo hot! - we quickly set up and straight to the waterfall -and what a view - what a lovely waterfall.... about 150 metres tall! But OMG the water was freezing! and the best part was - there was only about 15 people there! not really one of those places everyone goes! On talking to a few people Jack and I decided to walk up to the top of the falls......
OMG! I have never seen anything more beautiful! It was just perfect.
One pool waterfalled into the next pool.... was just spectacular.... I really cant describe it well enough to do it justice.... but the one pool that ran over the edge on to the next where some of the photos were taken overlooking the National park were just speccy.
It was so lovely I said to Dave he should go so he got up early and did the same - Jack went again too.... while Liam and I packed up and made brekkie. Jack enjoyed the walks - and loves the exercise. After we packed up we had another dip in the freezing plunge pool... so nice...it is still so hot
So back on the corrugation again...... and headed north to Cooinda. Was very busy there so drove in and then drove out! We went to where the Yellow cruises depart from as there was a boardwalk and looked at some of the birdlife in the wetlands... was lovely! Such a diverse National park...
Onto Jabiru , had a bakery lunch then up for a wet mozzie infested night in Merl Campground just 2km from Ubirr.!! But prior to the night we headed onto a 2 km walk around some Aboriginal art ( yes dad it is real and they do touch up but the last touch up was back in 1996 and is up to the land owner to retouch the paintings !!! lololol ) and onto the rocky enscarpment overlooking the wetlands/ North Alligator river for sunset. This was quite spectacular too. Lots of birdlife. The sunset was cloudy but was still quite picturesque. Photos coming soon on this!
Not much else to say about the night though.... we did have a fire only to keep the mozzies away! but I reckon Dave and I only got 4 hours of broken sleep.. Liam had a high reading in the night so he was really unsettled!
Then onto an Aboriginal run cruise - Gumbuylungi Cruise - it went for 1hr 45mins but was fab... would have to say even better than the Katherine Gorge one. Jack had a real good lesson in Aboriginal history and crocs today!!! Saw 6 salties ( salt water crocs ) Liam was sooooo excited! and of course he made everyone laugh on the boat with his antics. Was good too coz it was only a 25 person cruise boat.
And something not everyone can say they have done! We set foot onto Arnhemland!!! Usually you need a permit but because we were with Aboriginal guides we were allowed!
They explained on the way about food types in the bush and how to survive on the land and all the different spears used.... Liam and Jack both loved this part of course!
So after the cruise back in the car for the long drive to Darwin. Really not much on the way here and by this time Dave and I were so tired from the night before we couldnt wait to have a few days break in Darwin.
We were lucky to get a spot I think!! We are in a Big 4 park in Howard Springs - 23kms from Darwin city. Nice park. Had a swim already and last night they had a Didgeredoo Display. Was interesting. The boys enjoyed it thoroughly. They showed how they made one and how to use it. Was interesting.
So here we are ! All caught up now with the blog! Til later.!!!
