Which was a bad idea.
Up at 5.45 for a two day trip to Kangaroo Island. A small bus this time. Three Japs (didn't speak English), Six Swiss (chose not to speak English), myself and an English girl (sat at back of the bus), which meant that I pretty much got my own private tour of the Island!
Kangaroo Island, Australia's third biggest island, about 17km off the south coast of the mainland. First of all, an hours drive from Auckland to the harbour at Cape Jervis, which I managed to sleep through until we hit a Kangaroo (which sadly was fine if a tad dizzy, so no impromptu road kill barbie). Bought myself a pie and coffee and got the ferry over to the island. First stop was at a beach (don't recall which one) where we saw about twenty dolphins playing in the surf. Then onto Prospect Hill lookout for views all the way from the north to the south of the island (they're only about a couple of kilometers apart near here, so cheating a little bit). Anyway, off to our accomodation to check in only to find their computer wasn't working, but stopped for lunch anyway (barbie afterall, just not skippy). Then ontoSeal Bay Conservation Park for a trip to the beach with several hundred Australian Seal Lions chilling after a hard three days fishing. Pretty spectacular watching the lads fighting but a tad dull when a pup decided to wander over to us, which was great at first, but then we had to stand still for half an hour until it fell asleep. Not allowed to interract with them apparently. Still, eventually got off the beach, and off to Little Sahara for a second attempt at sandboarding! Only this time, it was standing up with the board attached to our feet, and with my sense of balance as it is, managaed to wipe out twenty odd times. Didn't even get to the bottom of the dune. At one point broke my fall by landing on my head. Bit dizzy, lots of sand in the ears, but might as well go out in style eh?! Oh, and pulled my groin. Twice. Good fun though. We then popped over to Vivonne bay to search for little blue penguins. Only saw a dead chick though. Ah well. The back to the hostel for dinner. Second result of the day here. As our tour overlapped with another group, we got a free upgrade to private cabins, and ad I ended up with the three Japs, they took the four bunk room and I got myself my own room with a queen sized bed. Sweet! Chicken stir-fry, a couple of beers and a wander round the nearby fields to look at all the millions of stars and then to bed. At last.
Day two, up at half six (lie in, comfy bed, nice) and pancakes for breakfast. Then down to the south west of the island to look at the Remarkable Rocks, massive old lunps of granite on the coast. Thn over to the west and the Flinders Chase National Park to check out all the New Zealand Fur Seals relaxing on the rocks at Admirals Arch. Pretty awesome smell as they're toilette etiquette really isn't up to much. Then to the north of the island, and onto the spectacular Snellin Beach for lunch. Then it was the homeward leg of the journey, back to the harbour at Penneshaw via a honey factory (honey ice cream, very sickly) and some chartered fishing boats back to the mainland. Finally the drive back to Adelaide (no animal crashes this time) and back to the hostel for some proper sleep.
Oh and the is less blood in my eye now, good thing I don't like to trouble doctors.
