Again up bright and early, only this time to get a bus to Canberra. Sat next to a young frauline called Anja from somewhere near Stuttgart. Three and a hlaf hour journey, and nothing went wrong! Strange.
Arrived in Canberra, and had the age old problem of not being able to check into the hostel for a couple of hours, so went to the supermarket with Anja and chilled out in a bar for a while. Got a bit worried we may have seen all there was to see in town in that short time. Almost. Wandered over to Lake Burley Griffin in the afternoon, and saw the Captain Cook memorial (theres a lot of those in around here), only this one was a bit different, it was a 90foot high water fountain. Cool, but glad it was free. Then took a walk around the National Museum of Australia. Again, glad it was free... Well the highlight was an exhibition of whirlygig washing lines. Blimey. Had a few beers in one of the empty bars that night, hoped that maybe it was just a ghost town because it was a bank holiday.
Got up the following morning and realised it was always a gohst town. Eerily quiet. Had been told the National Zoo was rubbish so decided to avoid it. Unfortunately this meant I had run out of plans for the city, so eneded up hiring out a canoe with Anja and one of her German amigos and going for a bit of a paddle around the lake. Exercise. Actually I really miss going to the gym now. Hmm, heat must be affecting my thinking. Got back on dry land, spent the afternoon in a bar called "Mooseheads" watching Die Hard 4.0. Cool.
Final day, and it had been about 34 degrees all the time in Canberra, took an hours walk over to the Parliment House and looked around the place. Big old building, quite interesting, but all I could really focus on was the noises of the fountain in the middle of the place, and wiching I could just leave the tour and ger a drink! So thats what I did, got a bus home, and relaxed for the afternoon in my room, which actually had a telly in it, and for the first time in months, watched the simpsons! Back to another desolate bar in the evening and ended up putting the world to rights with a couple from Leeds, strangely nice poeple for northerners!
And so the traditional early morning wake up for a flight to Melbourne, blimey glad to be leaving Canberra. I've been trying to think of somthing nice to say about the place, and all I've really got is that the beds in the YHA are extremely comfortable. But thats it. Canberra is officially the dullest place I've been so far, pushing Washington DC into second, crikey I hear Stinker and John call, but its true!
