My next stop is Aberdeen. I was meant to stop for a few hours in Dundee on the way, but they didn't have anywhere to store luggage, and seeing that carrying everything around all day wasn't an option, I just continued north. Aberdeen is the oil city of Scotland, equivalent to Stavanger in Norway. It's called the 'granite city' because all the buildings are, well... granite. It leaves a rather grey and hard expression and it isn't really my kind of place. At this stage a big city would have to be amazing to impress me, I'm so much more in the mood for the countryside. I take the bus down to see the Winter Garden in a huge park. There's a whole story here off course, but really not worth telling. Aberdeen is known for their flowery beds and parks, and they were even banned from entering city competitions because they won so much. The garden and surrounding park is lovely.
Back at the youth hostel I meet a guy that lives there for months. There isn't any work where he's from, so he has to live as cheaply as he can when he's working in Aberdeen. And this I find in several places, the hostel filled with people who aren't travelling they just need a cheap place to stay. Hmm...
