Today we left Port Augusta and headed for Coober Pedy. Along the road are some amazing salt flats and lots of suicidal lizards. We stopped for fuel at Spuds Roadhouse. There were licence plates stuck up everywhere inside. It was the most interesting service station I have ever seen.
We arrived at Coober Pedy late in the afternoon and checked into the caravan park. All the kids wanted to do was have a swim, so we gathered towels and swimmers and headed to the pool, only to find that it is closed until November???? The kids were devastated, but the locals were freezing. We looked quite strange in our shorts and tee shirts while they were all rugged up. We headed into town and we visited a Kangaroo orphanage and the kids got to pat a joey. After that we went up to the local lookout and took some great sunset photos. The next morning we did a tour of a mine. I imagined that it would be claustrophobic but its quite airy and cool. The kids and I had no issues walking through the tunnels, but luke hit his head about a million times :).
We also came across a spaceship while in town. The lady at the museum said it was hers and she was trying to get home...( followed by an awkward silence, lol) however it's actually from the movie 'Pitch Black'.
Coober Pedy was definitely worth a stop and if you have a zillion dollars you could buy an opal :)
