As i had not planned any activities I had a leisurely start to the day. I walked into town but soon realised that as it was Sunday not much was open so I headed to a street side coffee lounge and brought my diary up to date whilst watching the activity in the street and the park which was directly opposite me. People watching is always an interesting way to pass some time. I got back to the hotel and a few of the group were about to head off to the La Fortuna waterfall, on foot. As this was something I had considered doing I decided to join them. It was a little over 5km, which was not a problem, but we soon discovered that it was uphill, and towards the end it was quite steep. It was slow going in the heat and humidity and took us a little over an hour and a half. Once there we then had to descend 500 steps to actually get to the waterfall. The waterfall was fairly impressive, not so much for its height, but for the sheer volume of water which was tumbling into the pool below. It was hitting the water with considerable force and it was not surprising that there was a lifeguard on duty ensuring that people who were swimming did not get to close. We decided to head back and negotiated the 500 steps to the top. Certainly a lot easier going down than up! We had seen a little cafe not far from the entrance and decided that would be a good lunch spot and we would then get a taxi back to the hotel from there. There was still some time left in the afternoon so I decided that I needed and deserved a massage. Carrying my daypack every day had caused the muscles in my neck and shoulders to tighten up. I opted for the "Natural Massage" which I was told would be quite firm. What an understatement that was. More than once I was grimacing in pain. But as they say "no pain, no gain". That night we had dinner in a nearby restaurant and who should I run into but Flo Gonckel, who had been in my Mexico tour group. Such a small world.
