We still managed to pull into Flagstaff after dark last night. For this reason, I sacrificed dinner at Olive Garden (insert sad face) situated on the other side of town. It gave us the opportunity to try Del Taco ( every time the younger two have seen one, they both clamour to call out 'Del Taco'!!!' It is a cool people thing, I guess....)
It was reasonable tasting and cheap. My taco salad was pretty tasty. We only realised today that the 7 yr old left his sneakers and socks at their playground.
Flagstaff was cold!
We got in to our KOA too late for wifi, which was a bummer.
I tell you, the bathroom there was wonderful. Cosy and clean and smelling of all sorts of deliciousness, with a huge feature wall of a forest setting.
We woke up to see our very first squirrel. After breakfast and checkout we found Flagstaff Mall with a JC Penney, and FAR more importantly a Bath and Body Works!
Kara went crazy there, and so did the 7 yr old who purchased a Forever Red body wash and Paris for Men spray, 'which are both new!'
We bought bread and fruit. I bought a Paula Deen Cinnamon Crumble Cake. Sweet Mother, it is good!
Every breakfast we eat cereal: Reece's Puffs, Lucky Charms, Trix and Cornflakes. I wake up to peanut butter and grape Jelly on toast. Every lunch we make sandwiches.
We arrived early afternoon at Grand Canyon and though it was crisp with a chill in the air, it was not nearly as cold as I had anticipated.
For some reason, I expected a climb, so when the lookout opened out and down in front of us, I was unprepared.
No words will sufficiently cover the chiseled sprawl of echoey chasms and peaks. And the colors- a generous palette splatter of pinks, reds, and blues.
We asked about taking a helicopter into the canyon, but it was too late to go in safely, so they had closed for the day. My bank balance was secretly thankful.
To make up for this, we dropped into a close by IMAX they're to see Grand Canyon- The Hidden Secrets.
Very impressive.
Tonight's dinner: McDonald's so the kids could say they have done the super-size-me thing. I had a Santa Fe salad. To be honest, American McDonald's is perfectly fine! Their salad was delicious. Best McDonald's salad I have had!
Unusual person of the day: I got nada! I was a bit disappointed not to meet anyone super unusual today- I am not counting the animal activist......
The 7 yr old DID make me smile when he had the following converstion with the guy at the information desk at Grand Canyon:
7 yr old: ' hi, my name's Flynn
Dan: hi, I'm Dan.
7 yr old: Nice to meet you Dan. I have some bad news. We will never see each other again because I live in Australia.
Dan (seriously and without missing a beat): Well, it's been a privilege.
Tomorrow's adventure:
Bearizona!!!
There is no snow here for snow tubing at Williams. So we are going to see the wildlife at Bearizona ( which we originally planned to do this afternoon) instead.
