We got up at 7 this morning to head off for Uluru! After breakfast (cornflakes! Haha) we had a 3 hour bus journey to get to our next campsite. On the way we stopped to look at a place called Mt. Conor, which is pretty similar to Uluru but private property - someone owns the whole massive rock! We also saw salt lakes there which was pretty cool.
We got to our campsite around 12 and made lunch - chicken burgers - which was pretty good. By the time we had finished food it was starting to get pretty hot and I was a bit sleepy haha, but excited for Uluru. We started off by going to the cultural centre which was kind of interesting...you don't learn an awful lot about aboriginal culture to be honest because it's all a big secret, but there was some cool paintings and stories about Uluru, and a running theme of asking us not to climb it. There was also a "sorry book", which has lots of letters from people who visited and took some sand or a rock home with them, or who took pictures of the sacred bits of the rock that you aren't meant to photograph...they all seemed to have seriously bad look when they took these things, and thought they were cursed so sent them back! It was a pretty funny read in parts haha.
After that we were off to do the base walk around the rock. Uluru is seriously huge, wasn't prepared for how high it goes, and it is over 10km to walk around the whole thing - exactly what you want to do in the afternoon heat haha! It was good though, we wandered around it and it really was so cool! Not really what I had expected, loads of random holes in it and stuff but really cool! By the end of the walk though we were absolutely exhausted! We had a quick break and then a short (hour long) cultural walk with our guide who explained some of the places where one of the aboriginal tribes would have hung out back in the day which was quite interesting!
After that we were back on the bus and raced to a lookout point a little bit away to watch the sunset. The sun set behind us and we had Uluru in front! It was pretty amazing, seriously gorgeous and even cooler because there was a full moon as well! The rock gradually changes colour as it gets darker - although just from orangey to dark red...for some reason I had had it in my head that it would go all the colours o the rainbow haha, needless to say it didn't! Still awesome though!
After that we went back to camp to have dinner - an awesome BBQ with kangaroo steaks and camel sausages! Yum! There was even potatoes! :) the leftovers were going to go in the bin so I quickly jumped in and asked to save them for lunch the next day which was fine...result!
I had signal so used my phone to very slowly get my flight changes etc sorted and then we played a card game for a bit which was fun!
After some craic trying to find a spot without ants all over it to sleep on - there was none - we were all into out swags again to sleep! It wasn't half bad sleeping under the stars again, not as cold as the night before! Unfortunately we didn't see a huge amount of stars though because the full moon was so bright! Went to sleep hoping I wouldn't get a visit from any ants or dingoes or one of the little hopping mice that were running about during the night haha! Really enjoyed the day though.
