UNITED KINGDOM - DAY 8
Up extremely early today as there was a change of boat plans. The ferry we were meant to return to Wales on was cancelled due to the wind over the last several days so we had to come back by ferry. Three and a half hours of rolling in the waves, however this time there were cinemas and the girls went to see 'The Groods' and I went to 'It's a Good Day to Die Hard". Loved it.
We left the ferry in Hollyhead and travelled towards Chester. Along the way we stopped in a Welsh town with the longest name in the world. We're not even going to attempt to say it. It is Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. It means The church of St Mary in the hollow of white hazel trees near the rapid whirlpool by St Tysilio's of the Red Cave.
We stopped in Chester for lunch and wondered around. Beautiful town. We walked around looking at Roman architecture and learnt about gargoyles. They were created and placed on buildings to frighten away demons and such. The people thought that the only way to get rid of demons was to frighten them with scarier demons, hence gargoyles on churches and various buildings.
After lunch we continued to travel through Wales until we arrived in Liverpool. After quickly dropping off our luggage it was back on the bus for a tour around the city famous for the Beatles.
We got to see Britain's largest cathedral. It was magnificent. It was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott who won a competition to design the cathedral. He was only 22 at the time. It was not completed until 1978. The architect Scott didn't live to see his dream completed as he died in 1960. It was amazing to see the height and grandness of the interior. Gilbert Scott wanted a very minimalist interior as he wanted the space to speak for itself and boy does it. It was mind blowing.
After that we were taken to Matthew Street, for those in the know, the location of The Cavern, famous for launching the Beatles. We got to descend into the bows and wander through this tiny space where they still have live music every night after 8pm. All very cool though.
Then we drove down past the docks, where the fated Titanic was registered. The tour guide stated that this was why so many Liverpool people went to work on the Titanic, because it was registered here. Liverpool had so many places would love to see move but time constraints won't allow. Maybe next time.
