Donna & Neils Travels
Hi All,
here we are in BA and its really hot, a bit of a change from freezing UK. The flight was a bit of a 'mare as we had 2 stops not the one we thought we were going to get ( we stopped in Frankfurt AND Sao Paulo(although Sao Paulo was only a refuelling stop)) which made the journey time approx 18 hrs.
Having had a huge amount of sleep we felt rejuvenated to hit the sites of BA over the next few days. Sights included,
PLAZA DE MAYO
Nice square in centre of BA, included the Cathederal(pretty amazing inside).
PUERTO MADERO
Old port area that has been renovated and now houses loads of posh resturants, we tried to get in some on New Years Eve but they were fully booked and were having none of it. We did have some drinks here one lazy afternoon from a street vendor and just sat and watched the world go by(something we seem to be doing a lot of).
Other sites included the Obelisk, Plaza San Martin (where we had licuados(beautiful smoothies)) and the bustling area of Recoleta (which included a bizarre cemetry that was a like a small city of streets and alleyways full of tombs and mausoleums, including Eva Perons, you can imagine the queue for that one). Also, there was a great Sunday Mkt in the San Telmo area which had lots of local craft stalls and Tango Dancers in the streets.
One of the highlights was getting the train to Tigre, a small touristy town 20k outside BA. Here we strolled around by the banks of the Rio Lujan that was the focul point of the town with its many inlets where Argentines had holiday homes (bit like the Norfolk Broads but everyone spoke Spanish instead of like country yokels). The main tourist trade here was boat rides which we went on. It was nice for the first half hour but then got a bit samey, so was pleased we only booked 1 hour trip.
Getting back to BA, we have enjoyed the food here, especially the Steaks (well Neil has) and the fish has been pretty good as well, all washed down with the local wine. It has all been really cheap, even at the nicer resturants. Of course we found an Irish bar, but did not have the Guiness, stayed on the lager and had a good night out.
Glad BA has been our first stop as it has been easy to settle into and Donna has been able to practice her Spanish with the knowledge that most of the people speak a little English, Neil is still at the very early stages and can just about say 'Buénos Dias'.
