Today we drove approximately two hours to Tiger Leaping Gorge, with a number of photo stops along the way. The skies were clear today and we were fortunate enough to see spectacular views of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in the distance.
Tiger Leaping Gorge, is the deepest river canyon in the world at a maximum depth of approximately 3,790 meters from river to mountain peak . It rests gracefully in between the glorious Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and the Haba Snow Mountain and is part of the upper Yangtze River.
On arrival we walked down 600 steps to the bottom of the gorge. The river Jingsha roars through the gorge for 16 kilometres smashing up against the rocky walls of the gorge forging spectacular swirling whirlpool rapids.
Near the mouth of the gorge, there is a rock in the middle of Golden Sand River called Tiger Leaping Rock. People say that the tiger crossed there by hopping on the rock. This is the myth or legend about Tiger Leaping Gorge. On the other side of the gorge was a beautiful bridge. You can organise a sedan chair ride up the 600 steps from a local vendor for a small fee.
We had lunch at Shangri La, which was another banquet, 7 courses. I am getting so competent with these chop sticks. Continuing our journey back to Lijiang we stopped for some spectacular views of the Yangtze River.
Back in Lijiang, Jenny wanted to rest up as she still wasnt 100% so Claire and I ventured back to the Old Town and walked 6.3 kilometers shopping. The weather was much better this time and we had impressive spectacular views of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in the distance. Clara and Sunny met up with Claire and I and took us to our restuarant where we met up with the rest of our group for tea. After tea we went into the supermarket which was three levels and sold anything you could ask for, jewellery, alcohol, furniture, food, clothing etc. Dragging ourselves away from this impressive supermarket we met up with our fellow travellers for drinks in our hotel lobby. Somewhere along the way, translation was lost and what we ordered was not what we were served. Vodka and orange, was actually Vodka and Lemonade, reason, they ran out of orange juice. It was hilarious. Needless to say we had coffee instead.
